How Early is Too Early to Plan??? - TR Link Added - 12/29

Ok, I had this update about 95% typed up yesterday and the Disboards ate it. :faint:

I know I said I'd get something posted from our Gatlinburg trip. I've been holding off because I still don't have the pictures to go along with it. I still might at least try to do a brief update with some pictures and highlights if I can get some of them. I'm not sure if I want to touch on the drama any more than I already have or not though. :rolleyes2

Anyway, I have a few things to share. First of all, my parents are going to Disney World next week. For the first time ever without their kids or grandkids with them. Mom is very excited about it, but she has commented that it really feels weird planning a trip for just the 2 of them.

The trip came about at the last second. I have an aunt (dad's sister) who lives near Miami and she's currently undergoing chemo. They're going to head down this weekend and spend a couple of days visiting my aunt. After that, they're going to spend a few nights at AKL and visit the parks.

Now, they waited until Sis had her baby and everything was going ok before they booked this trip. It took less than 24 hours after booking the trip for Mom to decide she hates FP+ with a passion. She is the trip planner of the family and passed that gene on to me. She always loves planning Disney trips, even if one isn't booked yet, but she despises FP+. She tried to book them, but the main one she wanted was 7DMT. Being just over a week out, there was no availability, so she is essentially ticked off and fed up with the system. She's complaining that she doesn't know when she's going to want to ride what ahead of time and if she can't get the one thing she wants a week out, she is just not going to book any FP+ now or worry about learning how it works. The only FP+ they have is for the lunch at BoG. It could be interesting, but I guess we'll see...

As for our Disney World trip, there hasn't been anything substantial going on there. We have decided to push our departure up to mid-afternoon on Friday. The plan will be to drive a few hours, stop for dinner and then hopefully get the kids to fall asleep for the night. This should put our arrival in Florida at late morning. The reason for this is that FiL has never seen the ocean. And truthfully he has no desire to do so. So DW decided we're going to visit a beach on the way to Disney World and surprise him. :rolleyes1 I figured we'll just swing over to Jacksonville and then take the scenic route along the coast with a stop at Daytona Beach around lunchtime. That way we could grab something to eat on the waterfront somewhere and walk down to the beach before we go check in at WDW.

As for the Disneyland trip, we're still in a holding pattern. I'm awaiting some more details for my conference to come out so that I can get everything booked.

Now in totally unrelated news, I'm sure everyone has seen the ALS Ice Bucket challenge floating around. Truth be told, I'm not a fan. I don't mind donating to the charity of my choice, but the whole concept of being called out to do something and donate to a specific charity rubs me the wrong way. Ordinarily, ALS probably wouldn't be something I'd contribute to, but I have known someone who was affected by the disease, so I guess attributing it to her memory was something I could get behind.

Anyway, I managed to avoid being called out on it for quite a long time. DW had to do it about a week ago and I can neither confirm or deny that threats were made to keep my name out of it. Well, over the weekend, my brother in law got called out and he passed it on to me. I decided to go ahead and do it. And since it was 93 degrees and very humid on Monday, I was actually looking forward to getting cooled off. I figured if I was going to do it, I might as well do it right. For those of you who aren't friends on facebook, here's the video. I think you can click the image to see it. I can't verify that it works from work right now though.

And yes, I trusted a 4 year old to operate a piece of heavy machinery I was standing in front of. :rolleyes1

We did do a couple of dry runs to practice so I could make sure he knew what he was doing, but as you can tell, I made sure that I was looking up and ready to bail in case he didn't move the joystick the right way. :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

The third person I called out was my pregnant sister in law... just because everybody else was afraid to do it. That, and I figured by telling her to have my brother in law do it for her it would be a good way to get him back for making me do it. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Things are coming along well on the farm here. We've had a great growing season in Central Indiana. We've had mild temperatures most of the summer and caught rains when we needed them. We should have a lot of grain to move this fall and I expect harvest to start for some of my customers at work possibly as early as next week. I think we're still about 2 weeks away from getting started on our farm, but it will be here soon!

That is all I have for now, but I just wanted to post something to keep this PTR going.

Oh dear...your Mom does not sound happy. But glad they are getting a couples trip. I'm dying to hear how it all turns out without any FP+ selections. :scared1:

I like your idea of stopping at Daytona and eating on the beach before checking in at DW. :thumbsup2

I about died when I saw your post on FB of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and realized that it was your son on that rig getting it going. Nice job both of you.

Good news on the farm; it has been a very weird summer, but happy for the famers.

She isn't happy about it, but their trip may not happen. Apparently our niece has still not been gaining weight and she might have to go back into the hospital. I saw her last night and she looks great though. She's a very alert and active baby. Her mom and dad are both skinny, so I kind of wonder if it is that she just has high metabolism and doesn't stop moving when she's awake? :confused3

I like your idea of stopping at Daytona and eating on the beach before checking in at DW. :thumbsup2
Thanks. I figure that's probably about the most convenient way to do it.

He was loving life when he got to do that. :rotfl2:

It has. But that cool than normal weather in mid-July was pretty much ideal. At least around here

LOVE your Ice Bucket Challenge! I too felt a little weird that everyone was being forced to donate to one charity. In the long run, anything that brings awareness to a cause is a good thing I think :thumbsup2

too bad your mom isn't a fan of FP+. I can see how it would be frustrating for last minute trips.:headache:

NICE! A beach stop sounds wonderful. Daytona Beach Shores is really nice for a beach visit. You can drive on and there are public restrooms, but I don't recall a lot of restaurants during that stretch of the beach.

Denny and I got called out on the ice bucket challenge as well. We got it done while visiting Williamsburg. Having ice left over in our travel cooler definitely helped.

Uh oh. Sorry to hear there was a lot of drama involved.

Hooray to your parents for getting to go back to WDW! And during this time of the year the crowds aren't as bad, so it should be a fun time.
And I can't blame them for going without any kids/grandkids. Alex and I are already looking forward to hitting up the parks by ourselves than we are about taking Landon back. :rotfl2::lmao:

Sorry to hear about the FP+ issues, though. I can imagine how tough it is to get the 7DMT selection. If it's any consolation to your parents, 9 times out of 10 the ride has to be closed for a period of time. From what I get there's a lot of "technical difficulties" going on. :confused3:rolleyes:

And, from my experience, aside from Mine Train and Anna and Elsa, 90% of the attractions are still available the morning before park opening. Just a couple weeks ago, I got TSMM for 9:30 (could have gotten 9 if I wanted) at 7pm the night before. It's once the park opens to day guests that availability plummets.
So even if your folks don't want to plan ahead, they should still be able to get some stuff the morning of if they so desire.
It's not much, but it's something....

Beach stops are great, and eating at eateries along the coast is even better. Pretty delicious food out there.
I'd give recommendations, but Jacksonville and Daytona Beach are probably one of the two places I'm not super familiar with in FL. :rotfl:

Great picture! Your son is growing up! Definitely none of that toddler look left in him that was there during your Disney trip.

All right, I'll admit, I did have a mom, "Ohmygod!" moment when I watched that video. :rotfl2: Because at first I didn't notice your DS in the background, and then I was like, "Wait a minute? Is he trusting his son with heavy machinery?" But it was funny and original. And I'm sure your son's been around that kind of equipment his whole life, so it was familiar to him. Oh, and I know you've probably told me before, but I guess I forgot about your son's name. Guess we (or if your DW is like me and gave you little say, then your DW) have good name tastes.:lmao:
I'm glad Alex isn't getting on the DIS to see that, though. He'd think it was brilliant and get crazy ideas in his head. :rotfl:

Having stayed up last night when our FP+ window opened up at midnight for our October trip, I can empathize with your mom. Having done a trip with the FP+ reservation system that went without a glitch I'm still a fan but with our October trip being so short I was unable to find Anna and Elsa FP+s. It seems like people had better luck finding slots on Day 7 or later in their 10-day window but there was no chance for Days 1 through 5 which were sufficiently plucked by other guests whose 10 day window opened up earlier. I was barely able to find FP+ slots for the mine ride on our last day. Anyhow.

I have to say that I think your ice bucket challenge is the best one I've seen among DIS and FB friends. Even more impressive since you indeed left your fate in the hands of your four year old! :thumbsup2

Curious to find out how the surprise beach visit will go over with you FIL who doesn't sound like a fan of the ocean. :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

I loved your ice bucket challenge...your helper is pretty cute!

Jill in CO

I'm with your mom....not loving FP+ so far. I guess it wouldn't be toooo bad if I were making selections for just my family. But, with having to do them for my aunt & uncle as well, it's been quite the headache. :headache: Hoping it won't be so bad once we're actually there. I did our selections at 60 days out & could only get 7DMT for our very last day.

I'm not a fan of the Ice Bucket challenge either. But I do like how you involved (& really trusted) your DS. So cute! And he's growing up so much!

That was some ice bucket challenge!

Your mom shouldn't be discouraged about FP+ just because she couldn't get 7DMT. I hear that people are having a hard time of it at 60 days using their 10 day advantage.

That's nice to give your FIL the opportunity to see the ocean. It boggles my mind that he has never seen the ocean! I guess always living on a coast (either East or West) is something that I have taken for granted.

Your trip will be here soon enough. Isn't that FP+ window opening up soon for you?

Quick Update on My Parents' Trip

My niece was checked out on Friday and they determined that things are progressing better. She was finally back up above her birth weight and they didn't need to put her back in the hospital. On top of that, they think they know why she hasn't been eating enough and there is an appointment with a specialist to check it out on Thursday. Apparently, they think she can't stick her tongue out quite far enough and therefore just has trouble nursing.

Anyway, with this new news, my mom felt better about leaving and they did so on Sunday. On top of that, with her granddaughter being a bit less of a concern she was able to focus on the trip planning a bit more Friday and Saturday and stalked the FP+ situation. She was finally able to secure an FP+ for 7DMT. It is a 9:20 PM FP, but she got one none the less. She is a little bit happier with the system now and was able to secure FP+ for everything she wanted, even if not an ideal time.

LOVE your Ice Bucket Challenge! I too felt a little weird that everyone was being forced to donate to one charity. In the long run, anything that brings awareness to a cause is a good thing I think :thumbsup2
Yeah. I'm not a fan, but there are worse things that we could be doing with peer pressure. I figured I might as well have some fun with it.

too bad your mom isn't a fan of FP+. I can see how it would be frustrating for last minute trips.:headache:
She is warming up to it. We'll see what the verdict is after the trip.

I HATE that! UGH! Makes me want to take a complete week off from DISing cause its so frustrating.
::yes:: I may have said a few choice four letter words.

Please do! But you have my permission to leave out the drama because that does NOT sound fun!!!!
Eh, it was just minor frustrations. Nothing to ruin an experience.

YAYAYAYAYAY for your parents!!! :cool1:
::yes:: They really need it. They never really get away very often.

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt but glad your parents can have some happy time at the parks. :goodvibes
The good news is that my aunt's prognosis at this time seems very good. But it will be good for them to spend some time with her since we only see her once or twice a year since they moved down there. And yeah, a few days at the parks will be a nice bonus. :thumbsup2

Well, having BoG is not a bad thing. Hopefully it will work out for them.
I knew that was a focus. We ate there with them on our last trip and Mom loved it.

NICE! A beach stop sounds wonderful. Daytona Beach Shores is really nice for a beach visit. You can drive on and there are public restrooms, but I don't recall a lot of restaurants during that stretch of the beach.
I'll have to research it a bit more. I was hoping to find a place where we could park, walk to the water and eat on the waterfront. I've personally never been to Daytona though.

Denny and I got called out on the ice bucket challenge as well. We got it done while visiting Williamsburg. Having ice left over in our travel cooler definitely helped.
:thumbsup2

I think this is the adorable picture of your son, but I'm not sure so excuse me if I'm wrong.
It is. Thanks.

Uh oh. Sorry to hear there was a lot of drama involved.
Eh, not a lot. Just some annoying stuff.

I know. I love taking the kids, but what I wouldn't give for an adults only trip. :rotfl2:

It's not much, but it's something....
I mentioned it in the update above, but she finally took the time to utilize the system and she isn't quite as bitter about it as she was. I think it helps that she finally got a smart phone last week and I set her up with the app. Now that she can do it with her phone, she seems pretty happy with the system.

Beach stops are great, and eating at eateries along the coast is even better. Pretty delicious food out there.
I'd give recommendations, but Jacksonville and Daytona Beach are probably one of the two places I'm not super familiar with in FL.
Figures! :lmao: I've never been to the Atlantic coast in Florida... at least not to actually stop at a beach. I know nothing about the area either.

:lmao: Your wife's nicer than me. She should've earned brownie points for respecting your wishes.
She knows I'd have gotten her back... somehow. :rotfl2:

Great picture! Your son is growing up! Definitely none of that toddler look left in him that was there during your Disney trip.
I know. It happens fast.

All right, I'll admit, I did have a mom, "Ohmygod!" moment when I watched that video. :rotfl2: Because at first I didn't notice your DS in the background, and then I was like, "Wait a minute? To start that tractor, there is a button that has to be pushed in and the key has to be turned on. I had pushed the button in before hand so that all he had to do was turn the key. We had to practice doing that because he would get startled when it turned over and let go of the key before he got it started. Then the bucket itself... it is just a joystick. All he had to do was push it to the right to dump the bucket. We did several dry runs of that to make sure he had that part down too. And I did look to make sure that was what he was doing so I could get out of the way if I had to! :lmao:

Truthfully though, I don't like him to be around that tractor. I don't mind having him in the big ones with a fully enclosed cab. But a tractor like that is just too dangerous. He could easily fall off and get run over so aside from something fun and out of the ordinary like that, he doesn't spend much time on that one.

And just for the record... I picked the name. :thumbsup2

Having stayed up last night when our FP+ window opened up at midnight for our October trip, I can empathize with your mom. That is just absurd. :faint: I don't even know if we'll try to see them or not. I know the kids would love it, but we might just refuse to acknowledge their existence in the parks to our kids. :rotfl2:

I have to say that I think your ice bucket challenge is the best one I've seen among DIS and FB friends. Even more impressive since you indeed left your fate in the hands of your four year old!
Thanks. I saw a few others similar to what I did... but I follow a bunch of farmboys in Indiana so we're somewhat like minded. I figured if I'm gonna do it I might as well have some fun with it.

Curious to find out how the surprise beach visit will go over with you FIL who doesn't sound like a fan of the ocean. :rolleyes1 :rotfl:
I think he's probably about as big of an ocean fan as he is a Disney fan. :rolleyes1

I loved your ice bucket challenge...your helper is pretty cute!

Thanks! He really loved getting to dump water on me.

Loved that your son helped you with your ice bucket challenge! Very trusting! :thumbsup2
Trusting... yeah, I guess. We practiced several times. I wanted to make sure he knew what he was doing!

Thanks. He is growing up. Starts his second year of preschool next week.

He just doesn't care much for traveling. He has lived in Indiana all his life and it is rare that he even leaves the state. The Gatlinburg trips are about as far from home as he ever gets. He just isn't a big fan of traveling.

Your trip will be here soon enough. Isn't that FP+ window opening up soon for you?
I've got a little over a month.

Best ice bucket challenge video i've seen! :worship: Cool idea!
Thanks! I had some fun with it and it felt great. And DS really enjoyed it.

She is a little bit happier with the system now and was able to secure FP+ for everything she wanted, even if not an ideal time.

Glad to hear your niece is gaining weight. Do they think it's the Tongue-Tie condition?

I'd take a late FP for 7DMT over no time at all :thumbsup2

All good news!
