I drive him to school and he rides the bus home.

DD is in elementary school & DS is in high school -- their schools are right next to each other, but they have to take different buses. It's just easier for me to drive them to school.

Before DD started driving her own car (just a few weeks ago) we drove her in the AM. The bus pick-up was at 6:15 am and school doesn't start until 7:25 am and we live 7 minutes away. They would get there so early for no reason other than our elementary and high school district share bus routes and someone has to go first. By driving her she got an extra 45 minutes of sleep. Eventually, I started picking up her and her friends as well. That was more of a "stay connected and hear what's going on" than they needed it! ;)

I would always get a ride. I was probably the only kid who didn't have a car. I swear, every kid would drive to school the second they turned 16. The one thing that always made me laugh was the girl who lived a block away from the high school, but would still drive. I think the parking lot was just as close as her house was...

DD, 14, gets to school via me or another parent. There are not enough seats on our bus, and I will not have her standing or trying to shove 3 to a seat when it's all high schoolers. We pick her up every day, too, because she either has marching band practice or a private lesson.

I walked the school was only a block away. I would cross one street, walk down an alley, cross another street and I was in the high school yard. I would just go through the lawn and walk in one of the back doors.

My son drives the car we've designated as "the kids'" car. Our public school district charges nearly $600 a year for students to take the bus. Our kids have always been involved in before and after school activities year round. It ended up being easier to let them drive themselves. Otherwise, we would have ended up wasting most of that money.

My DD walks as our high school is only 2 blocks away. She leaves about 5 minutes before class starts!

I'm a senior in HS.
and I drive myself to school. :)
Frosh year, my sister was a senior and had a car, so she drove me.
Soph year, I took the bus.
Junior year, I took the bus until April 21st when I got my license. From then on it was me driving myself in my car. :)

My 16 yo DD takes the bus. She told us she's not in any rush to drive, and I'm happy about that.

Every student in our district is entitled to bussing, no matter how close they live to the school.

we live several miles from the school, maybe a 5-minute ride.

my daughter doesn't use the buys, though. she has to be at school at 7:20 in the morning. the bus comes at 6:30! so my sister drives her.

Private High school hasno bus service. Parents bring for first two years until they are old enough to drive. Many then get their parents' "hand me downs". :teeth:

When I was in High school for the most part the freshman rode the bus, the sophmores got a ride with a friend who was licensed, & then once you got your own licence, you drove your own car. The only time I remember seeing upper classmen on the bus was because it was their last resort - their car needed repairs of some sort & couldn't find a friend to bring them & had absolutely no other way to get to school.

DD takes the bus, I drive her or her friends drive her. It's different everyday. :)

I went to the public high school in the city next to my town that my town has a tuition agreement with, since we have no high school. Bussing is provided, but despite many bus company switches through the years, bussing is terrible. It's a 20 minute drive in good conditions, either by interstate or crazy back roads. Not walkable.
I took the bus every day freshman year, home and to school. Mornings were awful. The bus came between 6 and 6:40-it changed every day, so I was outside before six. School started at 7:45 and sometimes I'd be there at quarter of 7, other times it was almost 7:30. The afternoons involved 3 different busses and swapping at different points to get home. Total nightmare.
Sophomore year I took the bus most days. Dad drove me when I had newspaper and student council meetings, and mom picked me up when I had to stay late. I started driving myself the last 2 weeks of school. I got my license that December, but had to wait until April to drive by myself, and it was May before we got a "third" car. The bus wasn't as bad that year, timing wise. It regularly picked me up at 6:30.
Junior year I drove myself to school and back until October 23 or 24. That day I totaled my car pulling out of the parking lot. From then until the middle of May, my dad or a friend drove me to school, and mom picked me up. Talk about humiliating.
Senior year I drove myself and my sister to school, and my sister took the bus home, since I got out a class period early, and left when I got out.

We live in the country and have 2 boys in high school in town. There is a bus that stops down at the end of the driveway if the boys are down there waiting for it. But, they are both in Speech & Debate and one is in a school play. (Those activities will end in January) They both have practice for S&D and/or play after school and they both participate in Peer Court 2 X each month. On those days, they grab a bite for dinner with their friends and then go on to whatever activity they need to get to....so they drive one of our vehicles to school. They don't own their own car. The older one, we may not see until 10:00p 3 or 4 nights a week. That is NOT our normal routine...we are a family that has dinner together in the evening....but, it is good training for college! :guilty:
