How does waitlisting work?

If I book my home resort for September 1-7, 2018, can I be waitlisted for a different resort for the same dates, even if I don’t have points to cover two reservations? Thanks!

Yes. There is a selection when setting up the waitlist if you want it to replace a reservation. If you choose yet it asks for the dates of that reservation and resort it is at. If the waitlist matches the room is held and they cancel your existing reservation and use the points from that to fill the waitlist.

What happens to my points if the waitlist comes through and I am past my banking window. For example, I have October UY. I book lake view studio for Early September for 32 points and I waitlist and a standard comes in for 24 points and past my banking window (say it comes in July or even late August). Do I basically lose those 8 points since I can't bank them now? Have had conflicting answers from MS.

Just want to make sure I maximize my points. Thanks

In the scenario the points would be freed up but still need to be used prior to the end of the UY. Or if you had the waitlist going until 7 days prior and it filled within that last month the points returned would go into holding and need to be used prior to the end of the UY.

Yes, this is one of the reasons folks on this board are so adamant about choosing the best use year for your travels. If you never travel in the last three months of your use year, you wouldn’t run into this scenario.

We live within a couple of hours so our trips are year round for 2 or 3 nights each trip throughout the year. Guess for 8 points we will just enjoy the view.

Probably unless you had something else you wanted to try and use the points for before they expired.

There's always been talk of a one time exception for members but if you attempted to use it for 8 points and later had a bunch of points you forgot to bank or a late cancellation then you might be out of luck. And there's no guarantee they would do anything for you either.

It does work well the replace existing reservation. I just did it, and just got the standard X is our favourite month because you are visiting us confirmation for the new booking. No email confirming waitlist had come through etc. I checked the points and they'd just swapped the points over. I was quite impressed as mine never appeared on RAT despite me stalking it only a couple of hours before.

Yesterday I was surprised to get a “Welcome Home” email! It was only a 1 night waitlist, but it was for a BCV STUDIO the night of Moonlight Magic at DHS in October. I have checked for availability every day, it never showed up. Very happy! They even tacked it on to the BCV 3 nights I already had with no effort from me.
