How does the wait list work?

We have been wait listed for one night (11/8) 2BR at VWL since April.

When someone cancels a reservation do they take the first person on the wait list or do they take the first person who requested the same days as the canceled reservation? Does my question make sense?

What I really want to know is: Will I only get my wait list if someone cancels only the Thursday night or will they break up a reservation and give me my night in the middle of the reservation and give other wait listers the other nights.

They will "break up the reservation" to give you your night if you are ahead of someone who wants all the days from the cancellation.

What they don't do is "hold" available days for someone on the waitlist hoping the other days on their request will be come available. So if someone cancels 11/4 - 11/9 and the only person ahead of you on the waitlist wants 11/4 - 11/11, you will get the night of 11/8.

As long as the guest wanting 11/-11/11 hasn't waitlisted day by day. If they do that, they will get the 11/4-11/9 ahead of you. But if they waitlisted for the entire length of stay, they won't.
