How does getting a voucher work?

So it seems we may have to change our travel plans:headache:. Unfortuately I have already purchased non-refundable airline tickets. I know I cannot get my money back for them, but I am a little confused about what I do get. Am I right in thinking if I have to cancel I get a voucher back, and they subtract the change fee from what the voucher is worth? My tickets are from both Delta and Air Tran, if that makes a difference.

I've never had to cancel airline tickets before, and I still hope I don't have to, but I want to be prepared just in case.

With Delta you will get credit in their system (not an actual paper voucher or anything) that will be tied to the record locator number of the reservation you are canceling (so be sure to keep that number). The credit will show up for the full amount, but when you get around to using the credit Delta will deduct the $150 per ticket before they apply it toward the purchase of the future ticket. AirTran may not charge a change fee, but I can't remember. Generally you will have to use the credits within a year of the date you purchased the original tickets and can only apply credits toward the purchase of a ticket for the same passenger.

Air Trans change fee is 75.00 per ticket. It's possible they won't charge, but most likely they will.
