How does Fastpass work?

A lot of people are saying that I should use fastpass for the big rides. But what exactly is it? How do I get a FastPass for a ride?

You insert your park ticket into the Fast Pass machines (Located right outside of the attraction) and it gives you a ticket. You come back to the attraction between the designated times on the ticket, give the Fast Pass to a CM, and you go through a line specifically for Fast Pass, and get on a lot quicker than the stand-by entrance guests.
