How does Disney get away with this (CM related)?

Actually there is a huge misconception that if you work a job for Disney it gives you some big boost or something. The fact that I worked in one of their restaurants really didn't help me get a job at any other place. It will certainly help if you're trying to get another Disney job but not really for a different part time job. They really don't care

If the person that interviewed you has any idea of the Disney training model it will most certainly help you get a job. Disney packaged their customer service plan and sold the concept to corporations many years ago and MANY large companies use their service model to train their employees. It is a HUGE plus on a resume to have Disney training in your background.

We are chatting about a college student~
You have to look down the road & realize what it will look like on a resume.

There is nothing to indicate in the OP message that her daughter is a college student. She says at the bottom that her daughter became a FT Cast Member in 2007. Looks like a regular Cast Member to me.

August 28, 2006 - DD started College Program!
February 4-February 9, 2007, visiting DD doing her 2nd CP
Sept 10-Sept 17,2007, DD becoming FT CM

Started the college program in 2006 and appears she became full time in 2007 so its unlikely she is on the college program now.

Well is the daughter complaining about the hours, or just the mom?

Well anything over the 8 hour time period in the day would be over time or 10.81 per hour. That is an extra 550 for the week.

For a CP or standard hourly Disney CM that is a lot.

And Disney has some additional overtime rules that I don't remember. But there is shift differential pay and opportunities for double time that she might fall into.

When I worked for the Disney Florist and had to do overtime, I only got my regular $7.50 an hour. They do get double pay for holidays, but Disney calculates overtime differently than most companies.

They keep track of how many hours you've worked in a calendar year. When you reach a certain amount, you have to start receiving overtime pay. They have a report that comes out that shows people who are about to go into that category. At that point, they normally cut people's hours so they do not get into an overtime situation.

I thought WDW employees belonged to a union. The work hours should be stipulated in their contract.

Almost all WDW employees are non union because Cast Members employed at Disney World are not mandatorily required to join the union. Unfortunately at Disneyland, we are forced to join the union. I believe they do more harm for us then good. They make it hard for me to pick up additional hours and work extra days due to the unions so called "concern" for us. A large amount of my paycheck is taken out every week to go towards union dues. Everyone gets the same raises in most areas so they aren't individually based on performance rant.

Ok thats my anti-union rant haha. I am hoping to transfer to a department soon that is non-union.

Hmmmm....

As much as I do understand the "She should be glad she has a job" train of thought - are you (who say this) seriously saying you wouldn't be thinking "CRAP!!!" if you saw a 90+ hour schedule??? Really??

Sure - it'll be a helluva paycheck - but me personally? I'd rather have my regular ol' pay check and have a life (and sleep!) instead.

I wouldn't be happy, nor would I be rubbing my hands together imagining all the goodies I'll buy with my big honking check. I'd be like this:

Am I *really* the only one???

I agree!! Where I work we get called for overtime- its not mandatory---I get called at least 5 times a week to work an extra shift but I like my sleep to much so 99.9 percent of the time I decline....

Boy, that doesn't sound legal : http://hr.blr.com/BLR_Shared/topic/Florida_Overtime_Law.cfm

I wonder how they get away with this?

A healthy college-aged person should not have a problem working 13-hour days (health-wise anyways). I worked two FT jobs 9-5 and 12a-8am for a long time to buy a house. Lots of mothers work FT, another PT job, and take care of their families and this is years out of college:) Good time management practice for real life:thumbsup2

And thank you DawnCt for mentioning our troops. They, and alot of other professions, work crazy hours and are continously told to stop complaining about it, they signed up and knew what they were getting into:sad2:

Quote for the day: Put your big girl panties on and deal with it! Better yet, be thankful that the hours are there. My job is cutting back again this week, so I'm in line to be dropped to 30 hours again a months before Xmas!

How old is your daughter, just out of curiosity. Is she complaining about this or are you the one that has the problem with it.
Would you be this upset if she has 2 jobs and she worked this many hours?

I don't know how they do it. Disney gets away with a lot of things that other places can't do. I found it to be very odd when I first heard about it, but it was verified by many people.

My sister started working for Disney long before me. She was part time and working many, many hours. My neighbor, who was a Disney exec, told her to be careful. He told her that toward the end of the year, they would drastically cut her hours as she got close to the magic number of hours worked in the year that would make them have to pay her overtime. Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. Now, she is full time and in a different position. Now, she has a very set work schedule and rarely has to work extra hours. Unfortunately, this happens to many of the local folks who work for Disney. They have to save money to get them through the lean couple of months where Disney doesn't want to schedule them because they don't want to pay overtime. Who picks up the slack? New people and the college program kids.

That's not how it works in the parks, or at least if you're a member of the union. Hubby is a CM and gets OT for anything over 40 in a week and DT for anything over 12 in a day (IIRC). He has been getting OT since his first paycheck.

I was not a member of the union nor is my sister. Don't know how it works for those who belong to the union.

I think it might be in any of the union covered areas because I know that even though I wasn't in the union I worked in areas that did have union reps. We were given overtime for any shifts over 8 hours (really nine because there was an hour non-paid break then) and then for any hours over 40.

You'd sill get overtime if you only worked a total of 30 hours in a week, if it were 3 - 10 hour shifts.

There were also double time rules that had to do with shift differential and some other criteria that I don't remember.

I wonder if it differs between the more traditional positions verses park operations.

I know if you are in a STCU represented area, you get the same 'deal' as union members.

Obviously CPs and such are exempt from the union contracts but I know they are paid by traditional overtime rules.

I agree. Who is complaining? The daughter or the Mom.

My DD is 25 and an adult. She is old enough to fight for herself these days.

Another OP that has disappeared??:confused3

I don't blame her for disappearing, she asked weather anyone thought this was ok, she didn't say that her daughter was complaining, or that her daughter asked her to fight her battles, she asked a question and she gets attitude form people that say she should be grateful, well I wouldn't like it, I wouldn't work that many hours on my feet. And yes I agree our service men do it, but this is Disney, not defending our country. I love Disney, but like most companies, they will suck the life out of you if you let them. I know from personal experience, there is more to life than busting your behind for your employer. And people wonder why the CM magic has disappeared.

Bingo! :thumbsup2 **applause**

OP's are backed into a corner, then people wonder why they jumped down the escape hatch.
