How does dinner work? Does everyone arrive at the same time then we all sit and order? Is there always some sort of entertainment during and at the end? How long until the end usually? Will we know when all the entertainment is done? For our cruise our kids will be 4 and 1.5 so I'm not sure how it will go for the younger one. Do they provide coloring or something else to help the kids stay occupied?

There are 3 main dining rooms on each ship and you are assigned a dining rotation to visit the 3 rooms, with your serving team following you to each dining room. 2 dining times--main (5:45pm and late 8:30pm). You choose or are assigned a dining time when you book your cruise and if assigned late, can be put on a wait-list for main dining. Everyone at that dining time will arrive within about 15 minutes. You are shown to your assigned table. If seated by yourself, you order when your servers come. If seated with others, you may need to wait for them to arrive before ordering. Some dining rooms have entertainment and some do not. No idea on the brand new ship, Wish--but sounds like 2 rooms have entertainment. On the Magic/Wonder--Rapunzels and Tianas place have shows that go thru dessert (pausing at various points so you can eat.). Animator's palate has the 'sorcerer mickey/color change' on the Magic/wonder and Crush turtle 'show' on Dream/Fantasy. In animator's palate, Cruises longer than 6 nights also have you draw a picture and they get animated on the screens by dessert.

Kids get a menu/activity page with crayons. Some servers will do magic tricks, puzzles, or origami with the table--it all depends upon your serving team. Most will also cut up your child's steak if they order steak. (Everyone can order off both the kids and adult menus.)

Dinner will last 1-1.5 hrs. Note that you will have unique menus nightly and will never repeat a menu no matter how many times you visit that dining room (which is 2-3 times on a 7 nt cruise.)

Excellent information above. I'd just add that there is no reason to show up early for your seating. You'll just have to wait in line to be seated. Your table is pre-assigned so there is really no benefit to arriving early.

When they open up the doors to the dining room, all of the servers are there to take you to your table. You will show them your room key as it has your table number on it. Some people like to get there a bit earlier and line up, but it usually takes about 15 minutes to get everyone in. But do try to get there close to your assigned time and not an hour late as that throws the servers off. The Disney ships like to serve everyone all at once. So when you get there, they will take your drink orders and start bringing the bread service. You order your apps and main at the same time. They try to get the whole dining room eating at the same time. As others said, some have entertainment and some don't. The servers are good about letting you know the entertainment schedule. I am a bit OCD and like to know as much as possible before I travel also, but I can tell you that Disney makes it so easy that there is very little that you need to research ahead of time. Just show up to your restaurant at your appointed dining time and they will take it from there.

Not anymore. The table number is in the app, now. No more dinner info on the room keys.
I could not remember my table # on our second night (did not know it was in the app so thanks for that info) but thankfully I saw our assistant server in line near the door. I walked up to him and loudly announced "I am going with Mayuresh" which resulted in a loud cheer from the rest of the servers.

Showing up on time is important. If you are sharing a table, the server may not take the food order for the others until you arrive. Plus the server has multiple tables and it is more efficient for them to get the same course for everyone at the same time, since they have to wait with many other servers picking up food at the same time. Also, some restaurants have a show on a specific night and the servers have to get all the food to the table by the show, or they have to wait until after the show to finish.

That is good to know. Look at all of the ink that they are saving. LOL
Correct. To solve that problem I bring a black fine sharpie with me and I write our table number and dining rotation on the front of the KTTW card. Makes it easy and keeps me off the app for one thing.

I will do that again for our upcoming cruise as well.

The official excuse is that it saves time because they don't have to reprint cards when someone changes their dining rotation or table number. When the crew size was reduced and they wanted to keep the lines short for physical distancing reasons, saving time made sense. But, I can't imagine that this was really taking much time.

what about people not wanting someone to be able to know when they are in the dining room if they lose their card? Having it in the app on your phone is much safer than having it on a random card that you could lose somewhere and anyone could pick up. Personally, I think they started putting too much information on them, like why do they put the castaway club number on it.

If you lose your KTTW card, the first thing you worry about is someone knowing your dining room? Are you worried they will show up and take your place at the table? I would be worried about someone using it to charge drinks against it. Why should I be worried if they know when I'm in the dining room?

No i was thinking that someone might worry about being stocked by someone. I was using that as an example of why having information on the card is a bad idea for some people. Or if they happen to be on the same cruise as someone who they might not want to spend all of the time with or they don't want them to know what their dinning table or rotation is. There are many privacy reasons why having dinning information on the room key is a bad idea.

Not sure if they are still doing this, but on our cruise on the Wonder in October, they had the dinner arrival times staggered a bit, so everyone wasn't congragating at the door like they usually do waiting to all get seated at 6:00 or 8:30. I think it actually worked really well.

If there is a stalker after you on the same cruise, your only option is to jump overboard. There are lots of options for someone to find you aside from dinner. At dinner, even if they don’t know your table, it would be pretty easy to see you by just walking through the dining area or sometimes by just looking in from outside the restaurant. Poor logic.

Dinner will last 1-1.5 hrs.
This is the case with early seating. And it can be this way if you choose for late seating. But our late seating dinners usually lasted 2 to 2.5 hours. Everything is much more relaxed at late seating, so you don't have to rush so they can set up for the next seating like happens with early seating.

whatever I'm just trying to give an example of why having any information on the card is bad. I honestly don't see why people are so against this that they aren't going to go back to it nor are they going back to printed navigators. If it's a problem for you then stop cruising DCL won't care either way if you comply with them about how things used to be done and aren't done anymore or if you never get on a DCL ship again unless they change it.

This logic is faulty. Are you suggesting that we should never express our preferences or that we should never ask or hope for something to change? Because that's a pretty terrible way to look at things.

Anyway, nobody is using the dining information on keys to stalk anyone or to cause any other trouble. It's just not a thing.

For the people who it matters to that you have to have your dinning information printed on your card or have a paper navigator everyday those days area gone all cruise lines are going away from it. I really don't see why complaining about it on a forum or to someone at guest services who can't do anything about is going to change that. Society in general is going away from using paper as much as possible now or printing individual key cards as well. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they add being able to open your stateroom to the app at some point even.

The card is also used for making purchases, verifying that you're 21+ when buying alcoholic drinks, for identification when exiting and reentering the ship, and for turning on the lights. The cards aren't going anywhere.

Disney's excuse for eliminating dining information on the cards was related to Covid-19 precautions. Their excuse for eliminating the paper navigators was also related to Covid-19 precautions. Those excuses might have been bogus, but we don't know. All that we can do is express our opinions and hope for the best. You can be sure that those opinions aren't only expressed on this forum.

Anyway, we're way off topic. I think that the original poster's questions have been answered.
