Normal manicures yellow in the extreme sun and chip immediately once you get into the ocean or touch the sand. How have your gel manicures held up in the extreme sun (week at the beach)?

How do they hold up to the sand castle building?

I am a devotee of the OPI Axxium gel manicure. I usually get 2 weeks out of them in normal use. We spent 10 days in Mexico in December, on the beach every day, and it lasted throughout the trip.

Ive been doing them for over a year. I am either at the beach or the pool in the summer. They hold up perfectly!

I'm going to disagree, and go with their competitor no-chip: CND Shellac.

For me, the CND lasts longer, stays shinier and it better than OPI's.

In my experience, it seems to be all in the application...or better yet, the nail technician doing the application.

I had my nails done using the OPI Axxium product for about 18 months by the best nail tech that I've ever had. Loved it! Had one for my Bahamian honeymoon as well as Disney vacations. But I moved, and had to switch salons. I went to a salon where I am now and the techs there just didn't compare. So I gave up, because it gets costly going around getting crappy manicures while looking for the "one." :rotfl:

On a cruise I tried CND Shellac and loved it! She did a great job and it lasted two weeks. I especially liked that it was easy to remove myself at home (can't say the same for the Axxium product). I currently have a Shellac manicure that I got one week ago yesterday, and it's all chipped and I will be taking it off in about 30 minutes. And I've done not a whole lot this week! :sad2:

I think I live in an area where many still get acrylic from the walk-in shops at the mall...you know the ones. These girls that I've been to locally do not work in high volume salons (there really are none), so they do less of these type of manicures. The walk-in places do not use these where I live...yet.

My daughter had a shellac manicure during our cruise. They told her it wold last up to 14 days.

She kept going back to have it touched up. There is a chemical reaction with saltwater and suntan lotion that can take of the polish.

I get shellac and flesh all the time, no prob in summer heat, sand, chlorine, salt water etc. always get at least two weeks wear.

Thanks for the advice. My salon does OPI so hopefully it holds up.

Pedicures usually hold up a lot better than manicures so it's probably unnecessary, but has anyone ever done the gel on their toes?

Also interested to read if anyone has done the shellac on their toes.

No. My salon has the regular polish colors to match the gels. Sunscreen does dull regular polish, it doesn't dull the gel. I usually just travel with a bottle of clear to "re-shine" my toes.

I have never used either on my toes, and I wouldn't. My pedicures last just fine with no chips until I take the polish off to trim them.

A girlfriend of mine had Shellac on her toes and she said never again. It was unnecessary and a pain for her to remove.
