How do you treat a cold? one with a sore throat too?

I saw a research study once that said gargling with salt water is the best thing for a sore throat. So that's what I always do now when I have a sore throat (for any reason) and it really does seem to work.

Gargling with warm salt water helps sore throat.

Benadryl for stuffy nose.

Rest and drink water.

I had this recently. Took me 2 weeks to get over it.

NyQuil. It really helps with getting a good night sleep. Nasal strips also work for stuffy noses, plus Vicks vaporub on your chest. Getting over a cold right now and that's my nighttime routine.

Plenty of rest and water are about as homeopathic as I get when it comes to treating a cold. Ain't nobody got time for that, LOL. I treat each symptom individually with fast and effective drugs! Excedrin for the headache, Mucinex or Delsym for the cough, nasal spray for the plugged up nose (the WORST part of a cold, IMO), NyQuil at night.

I can't even remember the last time I had a sore throat, but I guess back when I did, I used Chloraseptic and Sucrets.

Basically all you can do is treat the symptoms. However, I know of medical professionals from other countries that routinely hand out antibiotics for cold symptoms, including supposed "last resort" meds like Cipro. Even cold-like symptoms that are caused by bacteria aren't necessarily well treated with antibiotics. My primary care physician is originally from China and attended medical school there. She did her internship and residency in the US, and her English language skills are impeccable. She said that every time she was about to suggest antibiotics for cold symptoms (like she was told to do in China) someone would "rap my knuckles". I think she was being figurative.

At least it's not like the time my parents looked over my sick kid. They got some remedy from Hyland's and I took one look at it and wondered how it was even legal to sell it as a cold remedy. My kid would have been better off with Children's Tylenol or Dimetapp.

it depends on what is causing it... i seem to get a cold/sore throat from allergies, doc told me to take Allegra and it really kicked my cold's butt. I take Allegra at every instant of a cold and the cold has always backed down... :]

1/8 to 1/4 tsp of powdered Vit C in warm water several times a day. Usually knocks it out overnight.

I also use ibuprofen. I use the bottle thing that you squeeze made by sinus med (I think), it works like a charm. Maybe because of the way the water shoots up your nose lol. If I'm congested in use it twice a day and it really helps.

Ah, I think that's different. I was talking about the one that actually pours through your sinuses. The spray probably wouldn't have the same issues.

We take extra Vitamin D all winter which definitely has helped with getting less colds. If I feel one coming on, I gargle with salt water every couple hours and take a zinc tablet once a day for a day or two. Really seems to stop it in its tracks. And I make sure I get lots of sleep.

If you want immediate nasal congestion relief, you can use Afrin. You spray once in each nostril and you will immediately be able to breathe. However, and this is a serious warning, you must absolutely follow the instructions about when to use it, AND you must get off the product by the end of the 3rd day of use.

For cold and flu prevention you might install full spectrum lights in the house. These are lights that mimic summer natural sunlight. I was reading a study the other day about these lights and the incidents of colds and the flu bug. One group of workers worked under typical lights. The other group of workers had full spectrum lights installed. The workers working under the full spectrum lights experienced ruffly 50% fewer colds/flus compared to the group working under typical lights.

Full spectrum lights can be bought from many places. The main thing to look for is a CRi of 90 or above and color temperature between 5,000 to 7,500 degrees kelvin.

The light bulbs can also be bought online here ~

Yep, Afrin is great when your cold is peaking and you can't breathe at all when trying to sleep. Usually, the 3 days of Afrin gets me through that worst part.

I just drink plenty of water and go about my business until it passes. After years of not being able to take most medications if i was working (or at night if going to work the next morning) i am used to just dealing with whatever symptoms i have. If throat is really bad i use halls Fruit breezes which makes it feel better for me. Even if i was not working i cant take NyQuil because it makes me jittery and unable to sleep-more like cocaine feeling than a nighttime relaxer!!!

It's the first product I actually considered to be a semi-miracle drug.

Mostly endurance and rest!!

We drink water, juices, herbal teas, gargle with warm salt water, sip cool water with added raw vinegar, and occasionally take a 'Cold-Eaze' lozenge.

All the 'cold/flu' high priced meds on the market don't seem to do much for us - just adds yuck to our system. I do take a Benadryl at night.

Never had a cold disappear overnight! We would all like that miracle potion!! :confused3
