How do you transfer the right number of points?

First thank you all for the oodles of knowledge and advice I have read on these boards.

Trying to accomplish my biggest DVC feat ever and more than a little nervous. We are booking accommodations for next summer for my extended family. In total we need 5 "rooms". Working on which families would share a 2 bedroom, which need their own studio, who wants to upgrade to a one bedroom...lots of decisions I am asking these non-decision makers to make!

In short my husband and I have points which will get us a 2 bedroom for ourselves and one of my siblings families. My parents will also be using their points for either 3 studios or a two bedroom for my parents and the other siblings families. My parents do not have enough points but we have found a friend with more than enough to transfer. We will be traveling in August and booking at 7 months in January when the transfer points become available. We have three resorts ( none our are homes) in mind and are running the numbers for each, which of course vary. We will not know until the day we book which resort we will get do we will not know exactly how many to transfer in to my parents account.

Do you transfer the most you need? Since they can only transfer once between parties if we are not able to get The resort we need the most points at then we are stuck with extra points andunecessary expense. If we do too little the way I read it they could not transfer more once the transaction is done. Do I need to have the friend, my mom and I call from the same place and pass the phone?

Have never done a transfer like this and with 19 people relying on me I cannot make a mistake!

Your safest course is to get a transfer of points to your parents that would allow reserving the highest point resort and room categories you are considering and then make sure the transferred points are used when making the reservation if you do not get that highest point option.

Whether that is necessary is doubtful. I am assuming the group wants to get the same resort. Based on the fact that the applicable studios and 2BRs were open for all of August for the last three years at 7 months out and even somewhat beyond 7 months out, I believe the following will highly likely be open in both 2BRs and studios at 7 months out for August 2016: AKV standard and savanna view, BLT lake view, BWV pool/garden view, VWL, OKW, and SSR. Poly should also be open although I assume you are probably not considering its 2BR bungalows. Dedicated 2BRs at VGF, but definitely not its studios, are also highly likely to be open. If your first choice is one of the above then you could get the transferred points needed to get that first choice. (Note, normally even BCV would be among those open at 7 months out in Aug but the renovation in 2016 is likely to take enough rooms out of service per week to cause studios and possibly 2BRs to be full a number of the nights per week in August.)

If first choice is otherwise, but your second choice is one of the above then get the points needed to reserve the higher of the two and make sure the transferred points are used when making the reservations if there is excess.

iF your first and second choices are not among the above, then realistically you need to start thinking about changing your choices before deciding how many points to transfer because it is unlikely you are going to succeed in getting reservations you want regardless of what is transferred. In fact, if just your first choice is not among the above, you should likely rethink your choices because AKV value and club level, VGF studios, and BWV standard and boardwalk view are highly unlikely to be open for some or all of the nights you want at 7 months out. BLT theme Park view is an in-betweener where you might find it open but some risk otherwise.

A member can transfer to another by calling MS and making the transfer, for which the member making the transfer needs the names and addresses of the other members but not their member number.
