How do you stop a bird from banging into your window?

There is one bird that seems determined he wants to get inside the house. Everyday for the past three weeks he is here. He sits on a branch outside my office window and looks inside for a good part of the day. Everyone once in a while he makes a swoop at the window and crashes into it. Again and again. Then he flies away for a while and comes back.

He does it from morning to evening.

I have searched all inside to figure out if he is seeing something he wants but there is nothing exciting in here.

I stand at the window and wave my arms and it does not deter him.

In fact, he is staring at me right now.

Any ideas or suggestions? (Other than my husband's idea - "shoot him". LOL)

By the way, I am asking because I am truly concerned he is going to somehow injure himself, not because I'm annoyed by him. I am actually very worried about the little guy.

I'll send my kids over & within a couple of minutes your window will be smudged up enough that a bat wouldn't even fly into it.

open a window on both sides of your house. He'll fly right through!

We had a mockingbird that literally pecked on our window for 3 months straight...daily. I went to the local wild bird store and they told me to put up a plastic owl or snake to deter the silly bird, and it worked!! You do have to move the "predator" every few days so it doesn't look so staged to the bird.

This bird sounds like he likes you. Have you gone outside to see if he will approach you there?

I had to call the local Audabon Society (sure that's not spelled correctly!!)..I had a ton of birds crashing into my sliding patio door. Seems that the birds see their own reflection in the glass. Only problem is that they don't seem to realize it's them they're looking at!!! They 'think' it's another male bird, invading their territory, so they dive bomb the 'other' bird!!! Obviously with less than stellar results!! I had to put up strips of trash bags, all along the outside of the window...it looked like we had a haunted house for a few weeks. But, it stops the reflection as well as being a deterent to the birds (because of the flapping strips). It did work...I have only an occasional bird that bangs into it now. If it gets busy again, out will come the strips!!

Hang something on the window. We had this problem a few years back. I finally grabbed a newspaper and hung it on the window for a day. Bird left.

Hang up a picture of Sylvester or Garfield in your window.

It's happening because the inside of your house is much darker than it is outside, so it's causing a reflection. Put a lamp in the window and it should help as well.

Yep, I'll bet if you go outside and take a look from the bird's perspective.. what he is seeing is reflection.. not inside your house.

Try some of the anti-reflective or deterrent ideas mentioned here!

You can also tape a silouette of a hawk to the window. It's pretty much the same as other posters have said about the bird thinking it's a predator.
