How do you stay cool?

It has been quite a while since we have visited WDW in the summer months- we usually go in December- but this upcoming trip is mid-May. Now, we are from south Texas so we are used to hot weather, but deal with it by staying inside from 11:00a-5:00p if at all possible... Myself and a few other members of my group are very heat-intolerant and can overheat very quickly and become ill (we also sunburn super fast and turn into tomatoes  which inevitably makes us overheat even quicker; we try to be super careful to avoid burning)

We do not like to go back to the resort in the middle of the day because we feel we lose a lot of time, so my question is what do you do to keep cool in the parks?

I have already purchased Frogg-Toggs but I have never used them so I don't know how well they work; I also have mister fans, sunglasses, sun visors, loads of sunscreen... is there anything else I could use that I haven't thought of?

I have tried to schedule lunch ADRs during the hottest part of the day so we get that little break, and plan to see inside shows (like Tiki Room, Nemo Musical, Lion King) during hot times as well.

Anyone have any other tips? :worship:

We take mid day breaks, when the sun is the hottest we are at the pool.
If that's not an option, find air conditioned places for periodic breaks.. Whether it be shops or a show or restaurant.
While in the parks, we just wear hats, constantly reapply sunscreen. And bring water which we refill all the time! It's the only way to keep from passing out ;)

Souvenirs shops in The back of The store (more cool)

AC Quick service to take a snack and our Time

With late park Hours Go in The morning, lunch in ac Quick service, return to resort for The worst Hours (Sister in The pool, me in My bed to just rest My eyes) Go in The park to eat in a AC table service AND have fun When The sun goes down

Go to The restrooms to Splash water in My face and on My arms

AC shows between attractions (if it's boring, you can rest your eyes)

A spray with a fan (put ice in The bottle and add ice in The day - Ask at counter service, it's free)

Iced water is free at all counter service, stay hydrated

Tiki Room, Country Bears, Carousel of Progress, PeopleMover.... My parents always found the nearest indoor show attraction with the shortest wait when the heat was getting to us (on top of drinking lots of water). There must be equivalents in each park. Time at least one for every two/three 'big attractions' or outdoor entertainment you have to keep from having a "Snickers Moment" would be my guess. I'm not a fan of leaving the parks, either, but taking a ride on the resort monorail and just checking out those three resorts wouldn't be considered too far out of my day, at least not as far as going back to the room since we don't stay Deluxe.

Hello fellow Texan! Here are my summer in WDW tips:

1. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and/or carry a UV umbrella. You can find the latter online.

2. Avoid wearing denim, which shrinks & clings when wet and takes a long time to dry.

3. Wear water-friendly sandals or crocs (leather or fabric shoes & sudden showers don't mix).

4. Don't forget your sunglasses.

5. Don't lug bulky bags around the park. I carry a small purse & the UV umbrella, & that's it. They sell water bottles & ponchos in the shops. I'd much rather pay a few bucks to buy those when needed, instead of having to drag them around all day, every day, in the heat.

6. Stay at a resort with a good pool.

7. Cool off at the resort pool each day. I also recommend a day or two at the Disney water parks. Have fun!

I like the idea of adding ice to the spray bottles! Also it hadn't occurred to me to hang near the back of the stores!

Snickers moment, haha :D

I actually do have some UV umbrellas as well! Never used them in the parks though, do people get annoyed?

  • Go to the parks at rope drop, take an afternoon break at the pool or room, go back at dinner time.
  • Mister fans.
  • Moisture wicking clothes.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • I keep a wet washcloth in a ziploc bag, add ice ad needed, to wipe face and arms.
  • Sandals instead of sneakers.
  • Use wet-wipes (I like Kleenex Splash and Go wipes) on face and arms.
  • Even simple things like walking on the shady side of the street or thru air-conditioned shops can help!

I edited my post to add more tips. Re the UV umbrella: I'm careful not to bump people with it, so I've never caused obvious annoyance. It's just like you'd use one in the rain. I can imagine other guests being envious, though... A CM asked me about it last year & pointed it out to her co-worker. They wanted to know where to get one.

Thank you! Great tips :sunny:

I think it becomes an all day strategy then. Like you, I don;t like to leave the parks either . It starts with getting the hot stuff out of the way early or with fastpasses. In addition to the indoor shows, having a FP for a Splash Mt or a Kali Rapids can hit the spot at the right time. Carrying a lot of fluids, buying or refilling more when needed also. A spraybottle with some water is good too.
And there will come a time in every day when you just stop into a shop or dining place for no other reason than to cool off.

If you are planning on a table service meal each day, try for a late lunch/early dinner - between say 2pm to 4pm. It's nice to sit in an air conditioned restaurant with multiple refills of cold beverages during the warmest part of the day.

For us we simply go back to the resort in the afternoon and live at the pool. It avoids the largest crowds and the hottest time of day. This isn't anything new to anyone, but for us it works!

I love the afternoon break. We rope drop and ride so much in the first two hours. Our afternoon break is about three hours , including transportation.

Water on the neck helps cool you down. Stay hydrated. Enjoy cool, long rides.
