one can be "within range" for their height/build

but still be uncomfortable in their skin
Yes, definately. I am 50 years old, 5' 4" and I weigh 138 pounds. I weighed 118 through most of my twenties, 125 through most of my thirties, and 130 through most of my forties. My doctor has recommended I walk to address weight gain and that is what I have started doing.....but, more for heart health than weight. I "feel heavy" but I am not so much concerned about my weight. I have become very sedentary with the winter months/cold and the job I do (sitting alot) and I am more concerned about getting my heart stronger than anything else.

I'm 5 ft 3 135 pounds..My BMI is 23.9... I'd love to get to around 22 BMI

I would be okay if I was a giant! :teeth:

Seriously, I am 5'9" inches and in high school I weighed around 120-125 lbs. I was very thin but not healthy. I was doing all sorts of crazy things to keep my weight down.

Then after HS I went to the opposite extreme. I need to lose weight and am trying but it is so hard. :guilty:

I am overweight and have a BMI of 34. Fortunately I am doing something about it via Weight Watchers. I have lost 18.6 pounds, and though I have a long way to go, I am focusing on the success. :)

I think this poll is skewed.
Really overwieght people are not going to respond to this.
Based on what I see walking around disney, well over half the people are obese.
I'm 6' and 235lbs, I'm built like a linebacker but could lose 20lbs.

I think you contradicted yourself with your own post. Your BMI is 32. BMI of 30 or above is obese. 25-30 is overweight. 25 or under is ideal. So 185 lb or less would be your ideal weight.

That's why I suggested that a better poll would be asking where people are by BMI. Though so far, about 61% have said they are overweight or obese, which tracks pretty closely with national stats.

Maybe....but, maybe not. Since no one can tell who or how the poll is answered, there is no reason why people would not feel comfortable to answer accurately.

FYI: My DH is like you....he is about 5' 10" and 220 pounds. He wears a size 48 suit (he has a huge back!!). He is walking with me and we hope to get a little more challenging exercises in after we walk for 4 weeks or so. I would be happy if he could loose just 20 pounds, too!

Maybe this thread will just encourage others to get healthy....not necessarily just to lose weight! ;)

The thing about BMI is it does not take lean muscle mass into consideration. So somebody could be very muscular with a low body fat percentage and still have a BMI that is classified as obese.

Exactly! BMI is just one tool to use.

I'm just right :)

I wouldn't mind dropping another 5 lbs.... heck, I've already lost just over 100 :rotfl:

Used to be a size 20/22.... weighed 226 before 1st pregnancy-weighed 254 at the end of the pregnancy.

Now weigh 130 (I'm 5'3") and a size 5/6 :cool1:  :cool1:  :cool1:  :cool1:  :cool1:

If I was 7 feet tall I am be ok..
Me, too! Well, I'd settle for 6' 5" or so...

Maybe eBay has a stretching machine?

I'm about nine thousand feet tall, so if I can just grow to 9000'3", I'll be right in range! ;)

Nah, I'm actually about 5lbs over the "you should weigh this for this height" thing, but since I'm tall with a big bone structure, I'm never going to look "thin".

I agree. Like I said earlier, I was very thin all through high school. 5' 9" and between 120-125 lbs. I was underweight according to these links here and the BMI thing.
But the methods I used to stay that way were dangerous and I was so unhealthy. I was terrible at P.E. too because I never had the strength or the energy to do much. Just stand around and look pretty was about all I could do.

Then with each pregnancy it was like a freedom for me to just let go. Now I'm in the opposite mess and need to lose major weight. Like surgery major weight. But I am not ready to take that step yet and will continue to try the "old fashioned" way of exercise and eating less. My goal is not to ever be that thin again. Not ever! But I would like to be healthy.

My BMI is 27.4, I would like to be 23-24.

5'5" 135 lbs. BMI 22.5 It says I'm in the normal range, but I'm working on losing 10-15 lbs. I think I look a little overweight when I look in the mirror. Used to weigh 115 before I had DS 10 years ago.

A little underweight but I'm really unhealthy and out of shape. I can barely walk up the stairs.
I'm 4'11' and 89 lbs. My BMI is 18.

What is that line from "Cheers"?

"What are you up to, Norm?"
"My ideal weight if I was 11 feet tall." :rotfl2:

I was quite thin through high school. Now I am maybe 30 pounds heavier than when I graduated, but that was 18 years and a child ago. I don't exercise, I never drink water, and I eat junk. I keep saying I want to try to start drinking more water and exercising some, but it just doesn't seem to be happening! I can tell I have put on several pounds lately, and I was at the Dr.'s office last week and the scale confirmed it. Yuck. Going to have to find some willpower and motivation somewhere!

Slightly overweight, BMI is 26.4. I was underweight all of my life up until my first pregnancy. I gained a lot of weight and still haven't lost it all.

I'm a little overweight...but I'm very active and and think of myself as being fit.

I'd love to lose 20lbs...but it doesn't seem to be happening!!
