How do you say beignets?

It's French... it's actually the most phonetically spelled

been -yay

Its not French in the proper sense. Its cajun French.... very very different dialect

Cajun French is a mixture of creole, French, Acadian, spanish and a bit of cajun in there for flavor.

Proper French (that spoken in France) is completely different... some words are the same but the way they are pronounced are entirely different. Cajun French is its own language:thumbsup2

Tchoupitoulas :lmao:that's a good one!! haha

You guys are making me homesick ;) Forget POFQ what I wouldn't give for a dinner at Bayona's

How do you say beignets?
Just wondering how to pronounce this. We're staying at POFQ and I want to try these. Don't want to be embarrased!!!

Haven't had them at POFQ but when we get them at Cafe Du Monde we pronounce them dee -lish -us ;)

I'm glad you asked - I never had them before because I didn't know how to pronounce it either.

I went to college at Nicholls State. Talk about some strange pronunciations. Between Thibidaux, Beauregard Hall, and Gouaux Hall, it would get pretty funny listening to visitors try to pronounce the words.

Hi....Sorry to give this thread a little hijack....but please fill me in on PO.....is FQ the way to go? Can someone tell me the difference between the 2 resorts?
Thanks!

I have never stayed at either resort ~ too close to what I live every day! I would go to the resort thread and ask to be sure you get the best info on the 2 resorts :thumbsup2

Hey! I went there :cheer2: Its Thibodaux!
What years were you there?
Nothing like a long island iced tea from Flanagans:goodvibes

I've always said been-yay.
But I have to share this. It probably doesn't matter a whit how you pronounce it. I was in line there last year, and the lady ahead of me (in a loud voice,of course )said, "Gimme 6 of them BAG-nets.
The CM didn't blink an eye, and the lady got her breakfast treats without a hitch. :goodvibes

Brooke - Other words that I love to get visitors to say...pirogue, fais do-do, lagniappe, laissez le bon temp rouler...

I could go on and on, but I need to do-do...That's means sleep...lol...

I've become confused by this thread.:confused3 Perhaps all those years spent in school during Edwin Edwards years in the 70s has addled my brain.

I agree with ben-yay or been-yay given that the poster meant "been" as in "Been there, done that."

Tchoupitoulas: its an Indian word. Not french. Not cajun. Not even creole. Pronounced CHOP-it-TOO-luhs.

I submit I am out of touch but I grew up in Carrollton/Uptown and never once met a Cajun from New Orleans. Naturally many things have changed and people self-identify differently now.

That said, enjoy Port Orleans!

Awww Brook... now you got me missing Cafe du Monde.;) I visit NOLA every summer and JUST decided not to go July 4th weekend because of this massive Disney trip and was also talking myself out of a June visit... now I'm thinking I may not cancel my hotel...:rotfl2:

Mmmmm beignets.... chickory coffee... mmmm....:worship:

why confused? I never said Tchoupitoulas was a french word :lmao: I just like hearing tourist say it! :rotfl2:

it is a French word == sorry :) it means fritter or doughnut. Cafe du Monde just uses the general word to aquait to the dessert and so in certain areas that is what people think a beignet is :)

And yes I am aware of what cajun is, thanks :)

As I stated, it may be the *proper* way but its not how it's said down here. If the poster asked how to say beignet while dining at Chef De France ~ that would have been a different horse with the proper french. The poster asked how to say it at POFQ :thumbsup2
We use a very different dialect down here.

Example: crawfish
Most around the world would say CRAYFISH or crawdads
If you order a sack of crayfish, most will chuckle and correct you. :lmao: now you can order a sack of mudbugs and be just fine and dandy however :thumbsup2

Its all about the local dialect ~ ya'll vs you guys same thing but it sure does point out the south from the north:thumbsup2

I pronounce it CHOOP ah TOO lus.

But those beignets at POFQ, I call them "tough lumps of dough". Nothing like Cafe Du Monde. Now those are good.

Lent was a bit too early this year for crawfish. I'll have to get some tonight for dinner.

Just do what I do - "Can I have some of those puffy things with the powdered sugar on top"

Lived in LA for a few years and didn't get into the beignets, but deep fried turkey-YUUUMMMM! We never roast anymore!pirate:

People actually roast turkey? :rotfl:

I have a friend who moved to Scottland a few years ago. I am always sending her cajun care packages with turkey injectors :lmao:
