DH has an interview (fingers crossed) with a woman with a last name spelled Ng.

All of their correspondence has been through email, so he has no clue how to pronounce her name when he goes to the office for the interview.

Any clues?

I am pretty sure it is pronounced "ing". Like shopp"ing" or "eng" like England.

I'm not 100% but I think you'd say it as "ing" like "sing" or "thing".

i will be curious to see.... my guess would be "ing" but it is only a guess....

'ING' it is:thumbsup2

I have a coworker with the same name....always tell him that its too hard to spell!:lmao:

:shamrock: Too your DH tommorrow!

I just googled it, and the consensus is ing or eng, with not much emphasis on the vowel sound, more on the ng.

.
Name: Ng

Phonetic Pronunciation: mm

Audio Pronunciation: (link)

Origin: Chinese / Cantonese

Notes: The correct Cantonese pronunciation of Ng is close to -mm- as in '...mm that tastes good'. The pronunciation -ing- as in 'sing' is a common English pronunciation of this Chinese name.

If it was at the beginning of a name, like Nguyen, it would be pronounced like Win. Just a Ng, I have no idea.

Every time I had a customer call with that last name, they pronounced it ing

I saw you are from Jersey... the interview isn't at Picatinny is it? Ok maybe that is a really common name but the only person I know with that name is from Picatinny. And honestly, I have no idea how to pronounce her last name, we always just say N.G. as in no good :lmao:

I had a friend in school and we pronounced it "n.g." (say the letters)

There was a teacher at my kids' school with that last name and it was pronounced as each letter too ("N" "G").

Sorry to add to the confusion! :rotfl:

Is it possible to call beforehand to ask someone at the office?

My doctor is Dr. Ng. She pronounces it as in ING.

I think hubby should go into the interview and ask how it's pronounced. It would be light conversation to get the ball rolling on the interview.

No, it isn't. The company is located in Cherry Hill. Interviews have been few and far between and most of them have been in the North Jersey/NYC area. That's just a little too far for him to commute.

Not a bad idea, but he will probably have to ask a receptionist or secretary to see her. He is a little self-conscious about looking like a fool. I don't get that since her name is not that common, well at least not around here. :confused3

Thanks to you all for helping us to figure this one out! I knew I could count on the never-ending knowledge of my DIS friends to get us an answer!

Ng is "ing" - I think that's pretty standard and he should be safe saying it that way. Nguyen is "win," but some pronounce it "nu-yin."
