How do you pronounce the word CHAI?

O.k. I couldn't resist. I am drinking a non-fat chai tea latte right now.

That is downright torture! Okay thanks everyone. I will now be able to pronounce this correctly and gosh I cant wait to try it with the shot of vanilla. YUMMMMMMY!

:)

I work at a Barnes and Noble Cafe which sells Starbucks products and I've never heard anyone call it anything besides with a "ch". Although it was funny, one time my mom called it tai chi, instead of tazo chai. :teeth:

And I don't know if anyone's had it this way, but in my store, it's really popular for people to get a chai with soy milk. Soy has become really popular and we go through a lot of it, but the one thing that we have ordered a lot are soy chai's. I remember one customer said that it's better with soy because the soy we use is vanilla flavored, so it adds extra vanilla flavor to the chai. Has anyone ever tried a soy chai?

Ah this seems to be the source of so much debate at the various Starbucks I tend to visit (Nashville says the "ch" like a "k" as in kite but the one in Atlanta says "ch" like cheese). Which one is correct? The Atlanta girls were quite huffy about it the other day!

Speaking of Chai... I am SOOO craving a Chai Tea Latte right now... sigh...

Thanks!

CH-i

I have never heard it like K in kite.

Denise in MI

Chai simply means 'tea' in India and every Indian person I've ever known pronounced it with a 'ch' sound.

Holy back from the dead thread, Batman!

Ooops! Didn't even notice the date on the thread! I am totally craving a Starbucks chai latte now, though! :lmao:

My middle eastern friends pronounce it like the CH sound in chair, and the long I sound.

Prounounced

Ch - Eye

I live in middle Tennessee and work in Nashville. I have never heard anyone say 'Ki'.

I do know many who mispronounce Chi (X) as 'chi' (like chai) instead of 'ki'.

Chi- as in China. Never heard it the other way before!

On a related note, how the heck do you pronounce beignets? I always want to try some when I'm at Port Orleans, but have no idea how to pronounce it!

I think it's (ben-yay), the g is silent. I could be wrong though.

:lmao::rotfl::rotfl::lmao:
I was just going to pipe in and ask, "Hasn't anyone here ever seen 'The Princess and the Frog'??? If you had, you'd know how to pronounce 'beignet'"...

LOL But since this thread dates back to 2005, that movie wasn't even a twinkle in someone's eye yet...Too funny!

I always pronounced them benyays- yah rhyming with hay (in my head -never ordered one). Ch-eye tea here.

It's the same in Russian. Chai is the word for tea, pronounced with a "ch" sound.

Yes, we had lots of chai while in Russia, only with jam for sweetener. :scared1: That's what cracks me up about ordering "chai tea." You're ordering tea tea.

And it rhymes with I spy. CH like cheese, then "I/eye." And it's ben-yay, ben- y(long A).
