I've always pronounced it like "Hauloween" but for some reason this year I just noticed that most people on tv and movies tend to pronounce it with more of an 'a' sound (like the name Hal), and it made me realize that it makes more sense to pronounce it that way and is probably more "right". Still, I know there are people who pronounce the 'a' like an 'o' (as I do), and I was just curious to see if one is really more prominent than the other. So how do YOU pronounce Halloween?

Neither

I pronounce the Hall part like the beginning of hollow or holler.

I was originally going to write it as 'hollow' instead of 'haul' but then I decided that they both sounded the same to me. Didn't realize that people might pronounce hollow and haul differently. Oh dear, I hope I didn't end up turning this into another "merry, marry, mary" debate! :faint:

Maybe it is an accent thing. I pronounce it HOLL-oween. Like Hollow. To me haul sounds like HALL. Or I should say that I say it like HALL.

Yes, me too, I say "HOLLOW". I'm from NY. It would be interesting to see where everyone is from. Maybe different parts of the country pronounce it different ways.

Hal as in All Hallows' Eve. I'm curious. Are the people who say Haul-o-ween southerners? I think people in the south pronounce certain vowels longer like up north we say pee-cans for pecans and in the south they say pi-kaahns

Wait until everyone finds out they've been pronouncing Dr. Seuss's name wrong all this time.
