How do you prepare for hurricanes at home?

We usually bring everything in from the yard. Make sure we have plenty of drinking water. We also keep a tub full of bath water just in case we need it for anything such as flushing a toilet. I like to make sure there are snacks too. :) Last year during Isabel DH taped the windows in a big X. All of neighbors did too.
We also keep the flashlights handy.
What do you do?

All the same as you, then we leave! lol we're right on the coast and we live on a barrier island as well, so we're usually the first ones told to get out. We're still in "wait and see" mode with this one though. No evacuation orders yet, but I think we may leave pretty soon anyway.

WE start preparing in June by getting our hurricanes supplies ahead of time.
When a storm threatens we put up the shutters, bring everything in, fill up the tub and our water bottles and lock things down. Then we wait it out and hope it goes some place else.

Well by the time a hurricane gets here it's usually a tropical storm at worst. But we're going out tomorrow to buy batteries for our flashlights and some extra food. And my aunt is hard at work making meatballs because that's what she does whenever there's a storm coming. (Gotta have your comfort food in the worst storms you know). But if it looks like something is gonna be nasty, we bring in stuff that might blow away (plants, umbrellas, stuff like that) and make sure we've got food, water, gas for the generator and batteries. But with the generator we're good for awhile. It looks like Charley should be here by mid afternoon Sunday. What a great birthday present for my mom:rolleyes:

We have accordian shutters for my Bay Windows, which we have only used once, about 4 years ago for a hurricane that never really came. I buy water a day or 2 before the storm, and always have canned goods, batteries on hand. I also make sure there is Candy available.:p Don't fill up the bath tub anymore, only my Mom did this.:p

Good luck. :) I would hate to have to evacuate. Do you usually go to a shelter or hotel?

my mother keeps the gallon buckets of ice cream containers and fills them up, they have lids and stack nicely. Fill the tub and board up the windows. Only if it is category 2....Category 3, we leave since we are on the coast, actually all island area. Oooh and pack enough tequila and rum for margaritas and daquries....gotta pass the time somehow.

Sometimes we go to the bookstore too and buy a new book or two.
