Box? The Real thing? Those new frozen bag kinds from the microwave.

For me...I looove boxed potatoes, but DH thinks it's tacky. He wants me to mash up real ones. (You know, in all my spare time! )

I'm with you. I love the box kind. Grew up w/ the real but now prefer the box.

My DH cooks a huge (expensive) and fancy Thanksgiving day meal. This year he is doing the frozen/microwave bag type for the mashed potatos because he has so much else going on in the kitchen. Add a little heavy cream, butter, salt and pepper and no one will know the difference.

When we host Thanksgiving we prepare real potatoes... but always delegate the task when someone (usually one of our parents) asks what they can do to help :rotfl:

real - Yukon Gold if I can find them.

However, it is usually the only time of year we do real, we like the boxed as well. We really don't do mashed all that much to begin with, I guess. Maybe once a month.

Used to be real only. Now we only use the frozen bags. They are so easy and noone knows the difference.

I like the box too. I prefer the fresh, but like most people have little time for peeling and dicing. If you want to make boxed potatoes seem more like homemade, add some cream cheese to them. Start with the cream cheese at room temp and add about half of an 8 oz brick for 6-8 servings and more for more servings. They come out creamy and so tasty, no one will know the difference. If you want to go overboard, add a clove of roasted garlic too. This makes them to-die-for!

We always do real. I don't think they're too much harder to make than instant.

ALWAYS real potatoes. I never use instant rice either, it just does not compare to the real suff.

I've been using the boxes for years...BUT.....I bake two potatoes...chop them up with the skins and add them to the boxed stuff....DH and the kids and grandkids...all think my "lumpy" mash potatoes are the best!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl: I also add real butter, salt, and little sour cream.
I've put off giving my girls the "recipe"....for fear of them telling on me!!!!
On the tangled webs we weave!!!!!!!!!!
Happy "Mashing" Everybody! Barb

Hey...You go girl. We all have secrets:lmao: I've been usuing a mix for my pies for years and everyone raves about my "homemade custard":rolleyes1

Our special holiday mashed potatoes are from a recipe in Yankee magazine from years ago - I admit these might sound a bit strange, but honestly...YUM!
:cloud9: :lovestruc :dance3:  :yay:

Yukon Gold potatoes, milk, a fresh egg or two, a healthy splash of real maple syrup, a stick or more(!) butter, about half a cup of grated Parmesan cheese, fresh or dried herbs of your choice (optional - I used to put in thyme and sage, but don't anymore), and salt/pepper to taste.

These are truly wonderful - not at all low-cal, but when you only make them two or three times a year...not so bad! The flavors all meld together and are heavenly. Sigh...now I can't wait to make them!

I did something similar last New Years Day. I cut up just a few red skin potatoes (left the skin on) and boiled them until they were really soft. Then I made a big batch of boxed potatoes, dumped the red skinned potatoes in and mixed it up with some butter, salt and pepper. It was easier than peeling pounds of potatoes and mashing them. BTW, they were yummy :thumbsup2

I'll be doing this tomorrow. Peeling 15lbs of potatoes then I'll mash them with milk, butter, sour cream and cream cheese. Real low cal!!!! But oh so good!!!

The real thing here - NEVER instant!:crazy2:

Real mashed potatoes are so cheap and easy, why would anyone need a shortcut here? :confused3

We usually use baby reds and don't peel them. They are soo yummy! But I am afraid to make them this way for the extended family as no one else makes them this way. I don't know how they would feel about the skins being mixed in.

We add real butter and milk to them (cream isn't something we always have on hand.
I prefer with garlic & cheese, but the more we put in them, but my 4 year old is picky and won't eat them that way.
