I have heard that chicken broth is supposed to make them fantastic...but I am not sure how much to put in???

I always do milk and butter....but have heard that condensed milk makes them good too.

no garlic...none of our family likes garlic mashed.

how do you make them?;)

wanted to add that I am looking for different ways people make them....looking to try something a little different....:)

i just follow the directions on the box!!!!! :thumbsup2

back when i used to make "real mashed potatoes", i used milk, butter, and lots of garlic salt (or regular salt) and pepper

I've always made them with warm milk and butter and salt/pepper. I have tried making them with chicken broth but did not like the flavor. I guess it depends on the persons taste. I've also added in sour cream before with the milk/butter and it came out really tasty.

I put a dollop of sour cream in with the butter & milk in mine.

Instead of milk and butter, use buttermilk.

A few weeks ago I also mashed up cauliflower and added to it. Couldn't even tell it was in there. :thumbsup2

For Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter I make my DMiL's decadent version:

5 pounds of potatoes
1 stick of butter
1 package cream cheese
whipping cream until you get the right consistency

Make them just a bit runny and then bake them about half an hour so they get a lightly browned layer on top. They are like a coronary on a plate but man are they good:love:

:faint::lovestruc....wow those sound good but a coronary for sure;)

Peel then boil potatoes, drain then mash up a bit.

Add milk, margarine, & salt put back on burner to heat up milk for a few seconds.

Then I whip my potatoes with an electric hand mixer.

Sometimes I might add a dash of garlic, cheddar cheese, sour cream if I feel like it.

Yep:lmao:that is why we only have them three times a year. DH grew up eating them as regular potatoes every week or so! I had to send the recipe back to my neighbors in New Hampshire last week when it hit them that I could not bring "Jan's Potatoes" for Thanksgiving this year:lmao:

Make sure that you don't over cook the potaotes or they get water logged. I also put the pot back on the burner after I drain it to help get rid of any extra water left in the pot.

I have found adding WARM milk makes a huge difference, a generous amount of butter and salt.

I do have other kinds that I make that complement certain meals but my basics are just potatoes (usually Russetts), milk, butter and salt. Sometimes cream if I have it.

Evaporated milk is how I was raised. Everybody on dads side of the family makes them this way.

Just don't do what my cousin did. She was in a hurry and grabbed the Sweet Condensed milk that you use in baking. Now, those were tossed out. If she had been making mashed sweet potatoes, it might have been ok, but regular mashed, nope.

I add milk, butter, a little bit of salt and pepper, and sometimes I'll toss in grated cheddar cheese.

I use condensed milk, butter, sour cream, chives, cheddar cheese, garlic, salt and pepper.

DW has a mixer. I whip them up in the mixer using the condensed milk, butter, sour cream, chives, salt and pepper. Once I've done that, I put them in a casserole dish and sprinkle them with the cheddar cheese. Put the casserole pan into the oven for about 5-10 minutes (or until the cheese is melted) then serve. If you like, can even top with some freshly made pieces of bacon. Cook the bacon until extra crispy (not burnt) crumble and use as a topping. :thumbsup2

Thanks to Le Cellier, that's how I make them. (Lighter on the butter and cream cheese, plus 1% milk instead of cream! Just a step below a coronary!)

these sound yummy too.

so far it sounds like everyone makes them like I do.....any different versions out there?

I boil the potatoes until they're soft. Then I strain them and pour in evaporated milk, butter, and sour cream and blend until mostly smooth with a handheld mixer. Add salt and pepper to taste.:goodvibes

I either rip open the bag add water & microwave or take off the top of the container slice the plastic off & microwave. Sorry but real mashed potatoes are too much work.

Butter, evaporated milk (not condensed), and a little pepper.. My family won't eat them any other way.. Yum! :thumbsup2

I do that all the time and I love it. Now I use more cauliflower than potatoes and no one knows.:thumbsup2
