Rockefeller Republican - probably most of you aren't old enough to know what that means. Here's a link if you want to look it up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockefeller_Republican
Also proud to call Win Rockefeller (our Lt. Governor) a friend. He's just had his second bone marrow transplant so please wish him well.
I became a Republican years ago because of all of the corruption in the local Democratic party in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana - the states I lived in. Those were the days when the liberals were Republicans! Back then the local dems were the horrible segregationists.
Winthrop Rockefeller (father of Win) defeated Orval Faubus (the Dem. gov. who called out the national guard and closed Central High School to keep nine blacks from attending). Winthrop Rockefeller was my hero, and I remember when he was elected in 1966. It was such a major step towards equality in Arkansas. There are still many AAs in Arkansas who are Republicans. When Win (son) ran against an AA candidate for Lt. Governor, he won by a landside even in the AA community.
I am currently working with a group called Unity in the Community that is getting ready to celebrate the racial progress that has been made here. We will have yearly events but the big one will be on the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High School. By the way - Central is ranked as the 20th best high school in the nation.
