I got it for Christmas from mil so I didn't want to return it. I put it away to deal with later. Overstock even says in the description that after a few hours the smell will go away. It hasn't, and my whole house smells chemically/musty/yuck for the second time.

I've never had a smelly down comforter. Maybe that's why it was on Overstock.

Maybe the dry cleaners could remove the smell for you.

Febreeze might also work.

Good point! I just assumed they all smelled funny because all my inlaws have them and they smell bad...they must have all come from mil (Overstock) too funny.

Thanks a bunch. I'll try Febreeze and leaving it outside all day, and then the dry cleaners. I was hoping there was some magical trick to it. :upsidedow

I don't know what it is, but DD has a down filled coat and it STINKS!:crazy2: But we have a down comforter that has never smelled.
I bought the coat at Sam's Club. I wondered if it was because it was "cheap"?
~Not insulting your MIL, just wondering out loud about your comforter and DD's coat~ :flower3:

I have had smelly ones before, too, and they came from JC Penny or Kohl's. The one from Penny's was the worst. It took quite a bit of time for the smell to go away. Febreeze is a good idea.

Down can get moldy, and once that happens it's almost impossible to get rid of. Take it to the cleaners, and if possible leave it outside this spring in the hot sun for a few days (fold it up and bring it in at night so it doesn't get dew on it.)

Sun can "bake" mold and help to kill it.

I'm enjoying the irony of Ducklite giving advice on Goose down.;)

me too

and it does have a musty smell to it so maybe it is mold.

I'd get rid of it, but bless my mil's heart, she loves to buy you things she thinks are practical or things that she hopes you'll brag about how you can't live without...crazy showerheads, fancy wine bottle openers, industrial size soap dispensers :confused3

I guess I'll keep it in it's plastic case and pull it out when she comes to town.

Thanks! :)
