I am desperate! I am recovering from a really painful root canal and woke up w/ the hiccups! OWWWW!

2nd: my 4 month DD is giving me these really weird/scared looks everytime I hiccup! I think it is freaking her out!

I am in PAIN--what do you do to get rid of the hiccups?

The only way I have found to get rid of them is to drink something continuously without taking a breath (chugging) until either my throat burns (diet pepsi) or I can not drink more at all without taking a breath.

It takes me a few seconds to catch my breath after but it works.. for me.

Good luck. I hope you get rid of them fast.

hold your breath
eat a spoonful of sugar
drink from a cup backwards--from the rim furthest from you, you have to bend over to do it

I've only had the first one work for me, the others may be myths

:dancer: did that work?? Tried to scare ya. I know that guy scares me, thought he might scare your hiccups away. lol Spoonful of sugar is what I do. Hope you get rid of them soon.

This works for me and my kids every time.

Draw in your breath as slowly and deeply as possible. Don't stop until you feel as though your lungs are going to explode. And don't rush. If you hiccup while you are inhaling, just keep going.

Then, when you cannot breath in any more, hold that breath for as LONG as you can. Wait until you feel like you are going to explode again.

Then, SLOWLY let out that breath, just like you did when you were inhaling.

Put your fingers in your ears and someone needs to hold a glass of water for you to drink. This should help. If not try jumping on one foot until they stop. Good Luck! :sunny:

This always works for me. I think it is because you aren't taking any air in when you drink like dvc jen said.

It's so funny that you said this, i had the hiccuos last night and my 21 year old asked me to please stop i was making him sick! Can you believe that! I should tell him about all the times when he was little and liked to make the animal sounds that our dinner used to make. :rotfl2:

:teeth: Emmaline Lola - Your baby is soooooo cute! :teeth:

these both work for me and my kids

we add a little water to the sugar

Another "drink from the furthest rim of a cup" vote. It always works for me.

yay! thank you to everyone! I held my breath and then I tried DVCJens's suggestion of chugging a drink! viola! they worked!

and Disney McGraw--you scared the heck out me! too funny!

Funhouse8--thanks on your nice words on my dd! she is the best and LOVES going to WDW!!!!!!!!! I've made another obsessed fan!

Gotta love the DIS, huh? Cured your hiccups!

And BTW, your DD IS adorable!

I used to swear by the teaspoon of sugar method, but about 20 years ago I found another one that works even better (IMHO). Take a mouthful of any liquid and hold it while you set the glass down (or step away from the drinking fountain). Then put your fingers in your ears and press, while slowly swallowing the liquid - a little at a time. By the time your mouth is empty, your hiccups should be gone. I think many of these "cures" rely on disrupting the rhythm of the spasms. That's pretty obvious with the sugar cure, as your throat does an involuntary counter-spasm when you swallow it. Not sure exactly how the method I've described works, but it has been surefire for our family - (and many strangers who have followed our advice) - for years now. And it's so simple, usually easily available, and not at all unpleasant.

My officemate taught me one of the easiest ways to end the hiccups, stretch both of your arms over your head as far as they can go. You will still feel the urge to hiccup, but you won't. I usually wait 3-4 urges then lower my arms and whala, no hiccups.

i've heard eating peanut butter is supposed to help as well.

glad to hear they're gone. i HATE getting them! :sad2:
