- Nikon d80
- 70-300mm f/4-5.6
- 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G Nikkor Lens

Is the deal too good to be true or are these lenses junk? Shooting in low light will cause some issues here using the 3.3 right?

I am not sure what you are asking? Are you looking to buy this from somewhere?

Yes...Im getting offered a great deal, all of the above for 730.00! What Im asking is if the lenses are decent in like low light etc. I know 1.4 is better but will the 3.3 be OK?

I don't believe the 28-80mm lens is very highly regarded. Is the 70-300 a Nikkor, Sigma, or some other? Is this all new equipment? What are your anticipated immediate and longer-term needs?

The biggest downside to that setup is the 28mm at the widest. Most lens for the DX format are 18mm, so you really lose quite a bit of wide angle. If this is a store that is offering this, new, be careful. If it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

Sounds like a good deal for all new equipment if from a reliable source and includes a US warranty. (See above cooment on too good to be true...)

As for low light- throw a $99 50mm f1.8 in the mix and you will be in business.

If you want wider you can pick up an inexpensive 18-55 kit lens pretty cheap also.

My friend has the 70-300mm without the VR and it's not good. Zoomed all the way out, handheld held, and you may as well forget about getting many use able photos w/out camera shake. (Unless you know you have very steady hands or don't mind using a tripod everywhere.) I'd try to save for the VR; maybe look at getting it somewhere in the future if you can't afford the VR now. It's worth waiting for.
I agree about the wide angle and maybe getting a kit lens that starts at 18mm. :thumbsup2 The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens for the price as well.
Good luck, whatever you decide!:)

I looked online today and found a two lens kit for the d80. An 18-55 and a 55-200 nikor for about $1100.

If you are a starting digital user, the deal you mentioned is a good deal. If you want to take pictures in low light, you will need to spend lots more on the lens.

Thanks everyone! It does come with a US warranty to answer someones question. Whats everyone feeling on the d60?

I would get the D80 over the D60. The D80 is a great camera. Its in the next level up from the D60 and it also has the focus motor in the body and will auto focus with both AF and AF-S lenses. The D60 will not auto focus with AF lenses.

As for the kit itself, I'm not thrilled with the 28-80 lens. 28mm is not very wide at all. I think your better off with the 18-50. The 70-300mm lens is ok. I agree with what a previous poster said about using it at the long end. Its the reason why I upgraded to the 70-300mm VR lens. That being said, I used a Quantaray 70-300mm lens for 10 years and got very good results with it. I would suggest you consider a monopod to use with it. On my June '06 trip to Disney I got a lot of camera shake images using this lens. Thus I bought the VR version not long after that trip. Until you can afford that lens (about $480) the lens you stated should be ok, especially combined with a monopod.

For $730 thats not to bad. It still gives you room to get an 18-50mm for about $100 (ebay or keh.com). For low light, if you the D80 route, then you can get the 50mm f/1.8 new for around $110. Sharp as a tack and performs well in low light. The D60 wont auto focus with that lens. Sigma makes a nice 30mm f/1.4 that will auto focus with it, but it runs around $380). Sigma is supposed to be coming out with a 50mm f/1.4 that will auto focus with the entry level Nikons, but no news right now on what the price will be and when exactly it will be available.

Not a bad camera but if you can swing the D80 I would get it over the D60.

::yes:: ::yes:: I agree w/ the others about the D60.

Ive looked on a variety of sites and I belive I will take everyones advice and get the D80 and buy the recommended lenses through other sites!

The D80 + 18-135mm "kit" lens is a good starting point. The lens is very sharp and has a focal length range covering a 35mm film equivalent of 28-200mm. The body + lens is going for about $960 online at present. Body only is about $720 online, currently. You could (and most assuredly WILL!) add other lenses to your setup as needed, down the road.

Maybe look into the 18-135mm lens. Its a great walk around lens. I have the Quantaray version- I use it most of the time.

My only concern would be from where you are getting it.. if its an internet store then make sure they are reputable... go search New Yorks better business bureau and make sure they aren't one of the fly by night shady new york scam shops that pop up all the time.

Otherwise it isnt' a bad deal price wise... just know that the 3.3 is at the widest and it will stop down quite a bit as you zoom

This will be my next step...thanks for pointing this out! The website seems reputable and has many good reviews (its also a sponsored site on google).

Quick update: Complaints to the Bureau indicate that this company has a pattern of misleading and deceptive business practices. A majority of consumers report that this firm advertises low cost and new merchandise on its website but receive damaged or refurbished merchandise. In addition consumers are charged shipping insurance fees which change and raise the price of the item. Complaints also indicate that this firm uses high pressures sales tactics when consumers call customer service. Consumers report being pressured to make additional purchases along with their original orders, and if they decline and cancel their orders they are charged an arbitrary cancellation fee. Furthermore, consumers allege customer service representatives gave false shipping dates and tracking numbers.
