How do YOU end a phone call?

My mother-in-law always ends phone conversations by just hanging up. Makes me think she's mad at me.

My mother, on the other hand, can't end a conversation. She says, Bye, and then Love you, and then, bye again, and then she'll add in something about when she'll see me next, and then another love you . . .

In most cases in TV/movies, they just hang up because having both characters say "OK, good bye" takes up precious seconds of run time. When you have to squeeze 1-2 sitcom plots into 22 minutes, every second counts!

As my Aunt gets older, I notice that sometimes she just hangs up when she is done talking. I think she forgets that she didn't say bye.

Your story made me smile. :). With that said at work it's kind and polite-"Thank You, goodbye." With family it's always love you, or talk to you later or something like that. When I am angry I answer, listen and click when I am done listening or just done period. No goodbyes no response period- just click.

It's interesting because when my mom or my brother calls I know I am going to be there at least 30 min talking. But if my sister or my dad calls its 10 min or less. Sometimes just 5, they both let you say hello then say whatever they called to say- usually something they want to share about their lives or maybe some good news or something. Then they say "Well...bye." and click.

It's usually my sister I'm talking to, since she lives in the next city over from me, and I always say "I love you, bye!"

When talking to a stranger or business or telemarketer or whatever, I tend to say "have a good day, bye." Even when what I really want to say is "kiss my butt."

I've noticed on television or movies when people end a phone conversation they simply hang up or turn off the phone. I always say "Good bye". "take care". "see you later" something to signify the end of the call but I wonder is this another one of those things that depends on the section of the country?

we've noticed that too.. especially on soap operas. Why do you think they do that? Drives me nuts..

I always say Bye.

The one that drives me up the wall is when people end with "MmmmBye."

May I assume you're also not too fond of "EE--Yellow" when someone answers the phone?

I think the tv phone hangups were developed by the same directors who invented the wrapped gift with the lid that detaches with the wrapping paper and bow in tact.:)

No. That one is fine. "MMmmmBye" sounds rude, blow-offish, patronizing. At least the ones I've heard do. Never heard it when I lived on Long Island but it's pretty common in this part of NC.

My dear MIL answers like that!

And yes, the gifts that are wrapped with the lids and just lift off have always puzzled me.

If it is a family member or someone I really care about my last words on the phone are always I love you or love you. My sister once asked why I did that because if she happens to start talking again I will say it again. I do it because you never know when it's the last time you will see that person and I always want that to be my last words to them. I do the same thing when I leave someone I care about. With anyone else I usually say bye.

TV is not normal/real life.

What cracks me up are the times when the police or investigators go to the home of a person who has died recently and the mother of the murdered child (or wife or daughter) serves them tea and snacks.

Um, if my close relative had recently been killed I would NOT think in any way to offer you tea and crumpets if you came to my door to ask me questions.

I like it when (on soap operas especially) the heroine wakes up with hair and makeup intact, including glossy lipstick. Whenever I sleep in my makeup (I know, I know bad idea) I wake up the next morning looking like a drug addict after a bender.

Or when the hero and heroine are kissing passionately in bed in the morning without having first brushed their teeth. Ew.
