How do you book YOUR trip?

I book with Dreams Unlimited from this site. I love that if Disney comes out with a discount after booking, they contact you and get you the discount (if you agree). Our traveling companions last year booked with a different travel agency and they only found out about the discount because I told them. Their agent reluctantly canceled their booking and rebooked it. DU does everything via email which for me works best. I have booked about 8 trips with them.

Is it a straight fee that "Disney Authorized" agents make, regardless of how much they book you for?

Because like I said I felt like I was being up-sold and not being let in on any money savings information. Basically if there was a way to book our vacation that that would have cost us the most money possible...this is what she tried to book us off that bat.

Again I know that all travel agents are not created equal and I am sure many will try to get the best deals for the customer and provide really valuable information. Just not my one experience. I know I can do much better on my own.

Here is how it breaks down, there is a commission for the hotel/tickets including some special events, dining and memory maker. Im rounding here but a 2,000 trip roughly earns you about $200. Bigger agency's can require their agents to make X amount in sales per year or be fired. If they are earmarked even more so because they have to maintain their "ears". If its a smaller agency there is likely less pressure, thus they aren't trying to up-sale you.

I tell people plainly here is what is available. I DO talk up Memory Maker because I LOVE IT! we got almost 900 pics from our last trip PLUS the video and ride photos. I think its cool for the price to have them. BUT THAT'S ME talking more as a Disney lover than an agent. I also am up at 12 am and 1am making reservations, sometimes with clients. We will split there list and i'll tackle three days and they will do others. AND for some I do nothing but make payments. If someone is better off renting points, I tell them. I'm in it for return clients, might not be Disney. People who I know, KNOW I am constantly keeping an eye out. The bad experiences I read about upset me because those are the people who make it bad for GOOD agents supporting their families. Disney can now move towards cutting out TA's soon with how technology gives them direct access to travelers. YES, I hear AND understand its easy to book directly with Disney. I guess it saddens me to hear because its literally giving a trillion $$ company all profit when you can help a small business.

Yes, calling and adjusting for a sale means you lose commission BUT i think of it as gaining a client because they know i'm not in it for the money. They book more trips because there is trust. That's what it boils down to.

Disney is pretty easy to book yourself and handle your own details, and since I hate not having control of my reservations I do my own.

Not that I have anything against TA's. I used one on my first cruise (till I learned the ropes) and I may use one next year to help facilitate a tour to the UK.

Anytime I can handle my own travel I do. I'm not a complete control freak, but I'm a really talented amateur one.

Used an agent the first time, then the second-- and found diminishing returns.

Now I book myself. Works fine. And I really like being able to make changes.

Thanks for that breakdown. It is something I was really interested in knowing. I agree, I feel bad because I am sure there are many like yourself doing the best you can for your clients (that is why I said this was my one experience).

I can see how a knowledgeable agent could be invaluable to a a person with not as much Disney experience or just does not have the time. I actually used to pay rack rates not being aware of discounts years ago....makes me cringe..

The agent I used seemed to be working on her own and she really dialed it in for us and made things very difficult for us in the process which in my opinion defeats the purpose. That one experience unfortunately made it so I will not do it ever again.

A friend of mine had this happen. Booked her trip through a travel agent knowing nothing about Disney and she immediately sold her on a TPV room at CR and the park hopper and dining plan, etc. Didn't even tell her about options just went straight for the priciest options. It was even during free dining but she paid full rack rate. And her TA did a terrible job with reservations as well. Surprisingly they are highly rated in our area as the go to Disney TAs.

Nobody will ever care about my Disney vacation as much I do, so I'm taking control of it.

We used a TA 3 x's. She was an aquaintence who booked several vacations for us. We still use her for other trips, mainly to give her the business, but I've taken over my Disney trips.

I find that through these boards I am more up to date on sales, specials, etc. then she is. I also like being able to edit things without a middle-person.

The only time I would go back with a TA is if they have a deal I can't get (like the current Magical deal being discussed on the discount board).

I really enjoyed booking our first trip on my own and learning so much about WDW, it was a little overwhelming at times but I think it was worth it. Whenever a discount or freebie came along I called and the CM went over all the available options to see what would save us the most $$. With the limited availability of some ADRs and FP I would always be concerned about not having complete control over my entire reservation using a TA. Also, I am a SAHM, when I was working a full-time job I don't know if I would have been able to devote as much time as I did on research and booking things so that might be something to consider also.

I have never used a TA for WDW. I've only used one once for our honeymoon cruise in '98. It wasn't as easy or maybe even possible to book online then, and he is a relative by marriage. We tried to use one to get a better airfare when flying to Chile for Xmas '99, but they couldn't get a better rate than we found. We haven't bothered since.

I would really miss out using one now. I love planning our vacations. I would read travel guides for fun, but it would just depress me to not be able to go to all of the places. I always read a guide for our planned vacations. I like having the control, and I actually love planning ADRs and FP+, but I'm kind of sick that way:)

That is soooo wrong! I give three price points. You can make your own adrs if you have an agent though. There's nothing that says you can't.

The whole losing control notion isn't Real. Agent only controls payments and changes. They are paid by you theoretically through the commission from Disney so you have "control" you can change things 124 million times, it's their job.

As for discounts, if you look at the historical dates on Mousesavers, you can get an idea of when a discount might be released, or you can read this board.

We always try to book with bounceback to lock in a good discount. Can always change to free dining or something else later.

For those who book on Disney website, have they enabled you to put in room requests online, or does that still need to be done by the phone? Room requests have been a source of frustration for me as they often "disappear" after phone CMs put them in. I wish they would let you enter it yourself online and have it confirmed in your email receipt.

We always buy our tickets through AAA - it's only ever failed us once. My mom bought mine and my partner's one day MK passes over the summer, and for some reason AAA assigned both tickets the same number. A quick trip to the ticket windows fixed everything, but I was very scared we were going to lose our FP+ for a minute :scared:

We usually stay on property, and book ourselves on the WDW website, but this past time we stayed at Wyndham Bonnet Creek and booked that on their website.

I prefer to book my own Disney vacations. After all these years, I know as much, if not more than most TAs , including those with ears. I only used a TA once, someone who was supposedly a Disney specialist, and it was a mess from the start.

I have nothing against TAs. I have used the same TA for the last 10years to help me set up other international vacations. He's been invaluable. And I can see the value in a good, qualified Disney Vacation specialist for someone planning their first trip, someone planning a very large, multifamily group, or someone who is simply too busy to do it themselves. I fall into none of these categories.

We like to book directly through Disney. I am a stay at home parent so I have some down time in my day (like right now) to plan a vacation.

I have nothing against TA's, but I just don't think I would need one for a vacation for my family.

I'm definitely a control-freak, but use an amazing Disney-certified TA for our trips, and will continue to do so. All I have her do is book the room/package we want. Saves me from calling, and gives her a commission at the same time. Most important of all to me is that, as soon as a discount becomes available for our time frame, she snags it for us immediately, whether it be at midnight or 6:00 a.m. She is only an e-mail away, and normally always responds to me within minutes.

I'm surprised at the number of people who won't consider using a TA because they want to "plan their own trip." You don't have to let the TA plan anything if you don't want to! Planning is half the fun for me, so I do it all. I was lucky enough to find a perfect TA, and feel using her services is a win-win for us both.

Last time I used AAA, this time I booked through DVC. We used airmiles for our flight. Pretty soon we will pay for the dining plan & passes.

We break out what we have to pay so we can afford to do more at the parks etc.

Yes, I left out the details of my experience but it was a little like that. Park hopper, deluxe resort, no free dining etc. I was not given any valuable advice at all. Just spend some time asking questions on the DisneyBoards and you will be an expert before you know it!

I do everything myself online. I just don't trust anyone else. If I need to make a change then I call WDW and talk to a CM.

I just book the trip myself through the WDW website. I already know what I want and I don't trust a travel agent (or anyone else for that matter) to book dining reservations, fp+, coordinate park days, etc.

I always frequent the DIS as well as Disney's website, so I am able to quickly learn of any new discounts that may come out.
