How do you afford frequent cruises????

Since we're OT anyway....

I'm headed to Ebensburg this weekend, jajomo - what's the weather like?

I think the common idea here is priorities. You just have to decide what's important and look to that. I think a lot of us get caught up in the day-to-day and kind of go with the flow without stopping to think, "Where's my money going?"

There are SO MANY things people spend more on than they need to (in my opinion, based MY priorities... which, I'm sure, aren't the same as anyone else's!)... For instance, we eschewed high speed internet (gasp!) until Verizon came out with a DSL for $14.99 per month. Now we get to keep it at that rate as long as we have it. Woo hoo! I think it's up to $17.99 or $19.99 now, but still a LOT cheaper than cable. And speaking of cable, we don't NEED a TV service at all, but we do have the Dish TV Family plan with no local channels, and it's $19.99 per month. We don't have a cell phone. We have local phone service with voice mail (so we can check remotely and it doesn't poop out if the electricity goes out), but no caller ID, etc. We just decided that since we were on the Do Not Call list, it wasn't worth the $4.99 or whatever per month to avoid the two charity calls we get each month.

We drive two paid for vehicles. We bought the 1997 Astro in 2003; after I'd purchased it, another dealer with whom I'd dealt called to follow up with me. He asked what I bought, I told him, and he laughed and said, "1997?? Do you know what year it is NOW?" Um, yeah. And I won't be bullied into spending more money when I don't need to!

We moved from a more expensive part of the country to a less expensive area a few years ago. We were really fortunate to have made a deal on our house and to have paid cash for our house here. Believe me, not having a house payment helps a lot. We could have gotten what seemed like a mansion to us if we'd been willing to take out a loan of about $50k, but we knew that wasn't what we wanted.

My husband gives me $210 cash every two weeks. I have that to spend on groceries, meals out, clothes for my daughter and me, and any other entertainment items (movies, museums, etc.). I clip coupons and shop purposefully. I buy smoked sausages when they're on buy-one/get-one-free AND I have a coupon. I buy bagged salad and meat after it's discounted 'cause it's about to expire (that weird green color cooks out ;) ). I go to a store where they double and triple coupons, and if I HAVE to shop at Wal-Mart (shudder), I make sure to have the competitor ads with me because Wal-Mart WILL match prices. I drink about a 2 liter of diet soda a day (yes, I need help), and I adore Coca-Cola, but purchase the store brands instead.

If we eat out, we usually go to places where we have coupons. IHOP, El Chico, Red Lobster, and many other "not McDonald's" places frequently have coupons in the paper.

I never EVER buy clothes full price. I get stuff on eBay, or at the second-hand kids' store, or on the 75% or more off rack at stores like Kohl's, Belk, Mervyn's, Dillard's, etc. I haven't paid more than $12 for shoes for myself in my life. I don't pay more than $10 (and usually alot less) for a shirt or pants. The same for my daughter. Especially for her, since she outgrows stuff in three weeks, anyway.

These are tiny things that add up.

While you probably won't be selling your house tomorrow to move to the sticks, there are things you can implement to free up some money now. The biggest thing is to know where it's going. And if you model these things for your kids, they'll get into it, too. I think it's fun to see where I can save the most. We are fortunate: both my husband and I had good examples (my dad is JHannah, Mr. "11 cruises in 3 years," and the one who's taking US on our first Disney Cruise... Thanks, Pappy!). We're trying to insulate our daughter against the "gotta haves," too. I frequently point things out to her like, "Look at these pretty jeans! They're on sale, too. But Mommy has three pair of jeans. I don't really have an excuse to buy any more." So she knows we're not obligate to get everything we see, and it's not just us telling her no. It's us telling ourselves no, too.

AND FINALLY... :rolleyes1

While I DO scrimp and save during my "real" life, I do that so I can splurge on vacation! When I hear people talking about how they buy groceries and take snacks so they don't have to eat out, I cringe! :) Half (okay, more than 3/4) of the fun of being out and about is experiencing everything to its fullest, gourmet-wise, to me. Our trip is paid for before we lock our front door on the way out, so I don't count pennies -- or calories! -- once we leave the yard.

LOVE traveling! Love this thread!

Hi all... just surfing the DIS and had to stop because of sticker shock:eek: .....I live in a very very very small town in west central PA (the 2006 graduating class only had 115 kids) and i am thanking my luck stars that we do...we purchased a lovely 1850 square ft remodeled home last ST. Patty's Day for 72,500 yes that is 72,500 not 725,000 I just wanted to say I LOVE BEING A HICK!!!!....lol:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I want to second that!!!!

For 750,000 in the boonies of Buffalo, NY, you can get an estate. No lie. Huge square footage, 100 acres, horse barns, whole shebang, even has a butlers pantry, which everyone needs. Very few homes over a million here.

Taxes can be steep here, though. We did look at a house last week. 22 acres, 2300 sq feet, beautiful landscaping...... $170,000. :) Taxes were only 2700/year, not bad.

Guess it pays to be buried in snow every year. ;)

i would love to live in a big house with some land...here in OK a new 3500 to 4000 square foot home with 1-5 acres of land runs about $250000 to $350000....we currently live ina five year old home that is 1700 square feet that we paid $112,000 for....we could afford to move up and buy a more expensive home (with all the bills that go with it) but then we could not cruise....

it all comes down to choices i guess....i travelled alot growing up because my parents worked for the airlines and that is what i remember the most...i want my kids to remember these things too...actually seeing things instead of just reading about them....but i do keep playing the lottery!!! :wizard:

*bump* Good thread, I appreciate all the ideas!

We are looking at moving now to be in a better school area and we will have to buy an 875,000 to 900,000 house just to move up in size to about 2000 square feet (nothing huge and enormous at all). And that's even with us redoing the kitchen and bathrooms in addition to that! Hmm....wish I could move out of here like everyone else I know has done!:sad2: Think of property taxes on 900,000......$13,500 per year just in property taxes. CA real estate has lost their minds!

Uuuugggggggggh! I hear you! We're both 34 yrs old with a 3 yr old daughter and we live in South O.C. Not only are the houses expensive.. but the lifestyle is expensive.. but totally worth it 'coz our city was voted 3rd safest in the country! :thumbsup2

We can afford to go on this $$$ cruise with a veranda because we have already budgeted it. We go on 2 major vacations a year, both or just 1 abroad. The reasons are: we are blessed that my DH has an excellent job (I stay at home), we take advantage of our excellent timeshare (marriott), and the biggest reason, might be that our DD is an only child (would love to have more, but can't). Airfare for 3 is affordable.

I really like your attitude and suggestions! I do try to save money while on vacation, but I don't do it by eating cereal in my hotel room for breakfast. I remember cringing when reading once about a woman who filled a suitcase with food from home for her flight to Orlando! Other than buying pop/water and maybe granola bars to tide us over until mealtime - I can either wait to eat an early lunch, or eat a nice breakfast at a resort or in the parks. Sometimes what I do at the parks revolves around where I want to eat! (Although lately - what I do in the parks revolves around Off Kilter's schedule at Epcot!)

I haven't been on a Disney cruise, but I've been on 4 cruises so far - with one planned for 3.5 weeks from now to Alaska with my DH, and a spring break cruise with my son next March. I always book the least expensive inside cabin, though twice I was able to upgrade to obstructed oceanview cabins for no more money (and got a refund in the case of the Alaska cruise). I don't drink (not even pop), buy many photos or souvenirs, or book excursions through the cruiseline. (I book excursions independently.) My husband travels on business, so we are fortunate to be able to use frequent-flyer miles for some of our trips, as well as hotel points for some free hotel nights.

Budgeting and priorities. My DW and I have a few rules about our trips, We don't charge them without already having the cash to pay off the card, that way we still have credit card protection. We book usually 9mos to a year out. We book and pay for the excursions before the trip, so there's only the on-board bar tab left. We stay in inside rooms, unless it's a free upgrade, and have yet to see the spa (or onboard gym for that matter). Souveniers are only for oursleves, and maybe a shirt or 2, no big ticket things.

I sell car parts, and my wife works part-time as a nursing assistant. We have 2 young kids. We have 2 cars (00, and 01) which are paid for, I'm also restoring a musclecar, and live in a 2500sq foot house with a 3 car garage in a nice suburb. We don't have cell phones. We don't have expensive tastes, and when we go out to eat twice a week, it's usually places like IHOP, Applebbes, etc. We don't go to the theatre or theaters, and clothes are bought on sale. I do as much as I can when things need building/fixing, and I have no problems looking for a good deal when it's worthwhile. I won't spend an hour and 1/2 tank of gas to save $5, I pick and choose the battles.

The big thing is that we pay CASH for everything short of the house and untilities. We get a good rate on the cred card we have (9.9%), but that's because we pay it off immediately when there's a bill. I refuse to pay someone 10% to use thier money when I can save up and be more patient.

Since our honeymoon in '99, DW and I have been on many trips and have another in the works, owing it all to planning and careful spending. We have already re-booked our flight because the rate dropped after our initial purchase-a neat trick that saved us several hundred dollars.

1. Book early.
2. Cruise in September.
3. Be patient and look for 'cheap' fares on Southwest.
4. Saving ones and change in a pretzel barrel in the bottom of the closet (trying to save enough for onboard tips).
5. Ask for Disney $$$'s for Christmas, birthdays, etc.
6. Yardsale; having one tomorrow!
7. Limit onboard purchases.
8. We carry on our own beer, etc.
9. Try to put back as much as we can from tax refund, bonuses, etc.

Hope these ideas help.

I may be about to become a frequent cruiser. Maybe.

I am a DVC member. I don't have to pay for anything but the cruise and the transfers to the port and airfare. Airfare from my area is not that expensive. I am not paying for a hotel room or rental car. Disney will drive me from WDW to the ship and back if I buy transfers.

I'm single, I don't have children, so not much need for photos or souvenirs, and only one airline ticket needed. But if I don't get a friend to come along I have to pay a single supplement.

Just subscribing since I started an almost identical thread just the other day... :rotfl:

Laura, you are my hero! I firmly subscribe to everything you wrote there.

I would also like to add that I live close to the port (no airfare or hotel charges), we cruise in off-peak season, and I started working an occasional weekend job (in addition to my FT job) to pay for vacations ONLY, so that we don't have to make any other sacrifices....other than the few hours I spend at the job. But every time they call me in, I think about how it is helping us go on another cruise. You'd be surprised how hard that makes you want to work! By the end of this month, my October cruise will be payed for and we can start putting some towards our 2008 journey.

Best way to get cheaper cruises? Have your family get a job as a CM!:cool1:

My son just applied for a college internship. I know once he is there he will never leave. so hopefully we can get a nice discount. that means more curises. Yeah!

FL Res discount, which is unfortunately less available than past years, booking cat 9 vs verandah cats, booking off-peak, preferably Sept, Oct....

I discovered this thread at a good time since I am having Disney cruise blues. We (DH, me, DD5, DD3) took our first, a 4 nighter, 2 years ago--inside stateroom, one child under three (free). We were able to go on a 7 nighter, with verandah, in November because same child was just under three again. (Big help.) There is no way we can do that again any time soon. I am a SAHM mom and hubby is self employed and all that comes with that (no health insurance, no paid vacations--don't work, don't get a paycheck--no bonuses, etc).
We don't have cable TV, don't go to the movies, buy clothes at consignment stores and live in a "cheap" state to live--Mississippi. Property taxes are minimal ($400 a year!) We drive paid for, used cars. I hang out my clothes on the line. I have two decks and two patios and no furniture on any of them because I won't spring for it! I just got my first haircut in 8 months. We homeschooled our kindergartener this year (for alot of reasons) but it did help with no extra expenses--school lunches, gas back and forth, all that stuff like wrapping paper, etc they want you to buy/sell. But I said all this because I have a question after reading all these wonderful posts:
How in the world do you NOT eat out?? I spend way too much eating out, I know, but it seems I spend a fortune at the grocery store and still don't have anything everybody will eat. And, for me, eating out is "entertainment." Since I am home all the time it's a way out of the house. Nothing is very expensive around here, but it does add up! I am SO admiring the lady that makes it on $210 every two weeks!
I wish I could give up this eating out and put that money towards another cruise that I yearn for daily (it's sad not to having something to look forward to/plan for) but I just don't know how you don't get sick of cooking and eating the same ole same ole!

Hi,

I know I am one of the lucky few that can actually drive to the ports and I can qualify for a Florida resident discount when appliciable so all of that saves me a ton of money. I also starting looking for deals as far ahead as I possiably can (for instance I just booked a cruise for 2009 on RCCL). I must say though, I don't get to do DCL becuase of the cost as often as I'd like too and sometimes go a year or two between salings because I have usally found great deals on the other lines. But, that said when I do want to DCL I do three things- book a year or more ahead so I have plenty of time to make payments, I might book the cheapest time to sail (Jan. & Sept) and or I'll look for any last minute deals for Florida residents. :) I also usually just do the quick cruises as they average out to the same price as doing one 7 day and that way I get to sail more than once a year!

:):) I love to cruise! :) :)
