I know, I know, you're all thinking "where has she been all these years?". I seriously don't have any idea how to begin this. I asked here once and someone said they give a little class on it at one of the resorts. I appreciated the post but would rather learn as much as possible before leaving home. I don't want to spend any park time in a pin workshop (although it sounds fun). Do I get a started kit to bring with us? Do you just walk up to anyone with pins and ask for the one you like best? Sounds awkward. Do you pin trade with other guests or can you limit it to just CM's? Maybe someone has a detailed link for those of us who are a little slow

If you see someone with pins, just ask, "May I see your pins?" I know that I love for people to look at mine whether I trade or not. As for trading, that is up to you. If you or someone else offers, you can say yes or no...it is all up to you.

Now, as for CMs, they have to trade with you if they have pins. Unless, of course, you are an adult and they have the lanyard for trading with kids, green I think.

I'm going to move this to our collector's board, for you.

As far as the trading with other guests, it has to be a mutual decision that you have a pin they want and they have a pin you want and you agree to a trade. With the CM's, you can say "I want to trade for the _____pin" and you give them a Disney pin in exchange. It is fun just to talk to the CM's even if you don't make a trade.

Check out the thread on here about the Lanyards and also Disney has a site

Disney Pin Site

you can also click on the park you going to (DLR or WDW) and find out specifics in terms of trading places etc.

I bought a couple pins this trip for the first time, and got one for doing the Segway tour. I have no plans to trade and only plan on buying some pins from my favorite parks, rides, or events (got the Halloween Party pin). Trading would be fun, but I bet a fair number of people view it as something to collect as a memory from a special ride, park, etc.
