I don't think that it's wise to shoot at anything but the highest quality level that your camera can do.
You can always reduce a large picture, but you'll never be able to add back picture information that you lost by shooting at a lower resolution or quality level. With $30 2gig cards, running out of space isn't much of an excuse, either.
