how do I start with Atkins

so with very little time left to get rid of the excess pounds I've now decided that cutting out all the chocs and crisps just is not enough.

So its Atkins now for me..

How do I start ? :confused3
 
The biggest hint I can give is to buy the book! It really will help - even if you only read the chapter on induction!

My DH has just started the atkins diet and hes trying to get me to do it too, i am very tempted. Hes only been on it for 3 days.

He is living on bacon, sausages (turkey sausages), eggs, steaks. You can't have anything with carbs or sugar really. You can't have any milk, yogurts but you can have a set amount of cheese a day. He has a lot of omelets.

when you start Atkins you are only allowed 20 grams of carbs a day for 14 days. You should get the book as it has a carb counter in it so you can see what you can and can't eat.
Also go over to the W.I.S.H. board lots of ideas and support there.
 

I did it last year.

A typical day on induction was....

Egg and bacon for breakfast

Lunch was tuno mayo, egg mayo and some salad (beware some salad things have carbs in)

Dinner was a meat based curry with broccoli in it. Fry the meat (in proper oil) then add a table sppon of curry paste, as much cream as you like and the broccoli.

Sounds a but dodgy but very tasty and hardly any carbs

Drink coffee with no milk, but you can have cream if you prefer.

I hope that gives you an idea, but the book is the way to go, or I'm sure Atkins has a website

I have been on it 3 times, the first time for 8 weeks, then I only lasted about a week after that! I found it really hard, as all the food that I had to eat was not part of my normal diet. I love fruit and veg and found it very difficult to give up. Also be carefull to take you vits and minerals as the sudden withdrawel of these can cause problems, leg cramps etc.
 
my dh started the atkins in jan.2004. so far he has lost 72lbs!!! he is really strict with it and follows it to a "T". he looks like a new person!!!

can anyone tell me what ketosis is ?

Apparently your body goes to this when you start ?

So how do I know when this happens and do I have to beware of anything ??

I have read about that too, i think its something that burns the fat faster, though i could be wrong.

I have decided to join DH and i begin tomorrow. I want to loos about 1 1/2 to 2 stone before september. I hope i can do it.

I have been putting off weighing my self but have just done it, I weigh **stone and 7lbs.:eek:

I would love to be able to loose 2 stone in the next 3 months but will settle for 1 and half. Or two dress sizes

I am going to weigh myself next monday again and see how i am getting on:Pinkbounc

The book is a great help, it gives you all sorts of ideas:drinking1 none of this for atleast the next 2 weeks though.

Iwanna do at least a stone if not more

I managed a stone last year and lost it quite quickly. The only problem is that I put it back on after my hols just as quick !!

I've been good at work today.. I work in the maternity unit and when our mums go home after having their babies they buy us chocys !!

Last year when I was on the Atkins, there were several of us at work doing it.
A lovely lady bought some large tins of chocys in for us. We laughed and said that we couldn't eat them cos we were on the atkins diet. The next thing we see is her hubby with two tesco carrier bags with cooked chickens in them LOL:teeth:
He had overheard us telling everyone that we were on the diet so got us chickens instead LOL

Yeah will do the weigh in, have had omellete for breakfast and went to Asda after dropping DD off at nursery and got a cooked chicken.

I am craving choc and toast but i'm sure that it will pass in a couple of days:Pinkbounc

I work at mothercare and my sales manager is starting today too:bounce:

I really hope its gonna work and that i don't end up putting the weight on:rolleyes:

Ketosis is when you purge your body of the extra carbs (sugar) in your system. (Layman's version)

After about 2 days this will happen, and because you are taking in very low amounts of carbs, you will not convert any to fat as you will need them all!! I hope that makes sense.

I found this to be a great spur when feeling like giving up. If you do falter and eat lots of carbs you then need to start all over again to get back into ketosis.

I'm seriously consodering doing Atkins again as I need to lose at least a stone.

Ketosis simply means that your body is burning fat to provide energy.

By nature, the body will burn carbohydrates by preference and then store excess as fat. This is why you easily get a sugar high after bingeing on sweets as sugar is pure carbohydrate. Ketosis is started by not giving the body the carbohydrates (hence low-carb diet) and forcing it to burn fat. This forcing, BTW, is not harmful but natural. In cavemen days, excess energy was stored as fat and then burned off in the lean times; we don't have the lean times (days without a meal) and therefore pile up the fat without ever burning it off.

You must supplement your essential minerals and vitamins. I do this by having a Tesco effervescent multivitamin at breakfast instead of fruit juice.

I have lost 4 stone so far. The downside (in UK) is that it is not easy to eat out, also ketosis produces ketones which cause breath odours - I use breath freshening tablets in place of sweets to combat this. The upside is having grilled duck breast on a bed of ceasar salad whilst the rest of the family have chicken nuggets and oven chips!!
 
Well Today folks ...........:(

I had flapjacks at work today :eek:

and I've just had a bowl of Cornflakes :teeth:


Hubby has lost 4lb since sunday I might have lost 4oz :rolleyes:

But I will carry on

I've been so good this week so I feel a bit down now :sad:


I'm still determined to lose it mut I get the munchies and have to have something to graze on !

Any idea what I can pick on ?:confused:
 
I recommend cheese as a snack on Atkins - you just need to remember to count the carbs! Also slices of ham are quite good to nibble on!

Another tip for after the first two weeks of induction is diabetic chocolate the dark kind is very low in carbs (the carbs it has are the polyiol kind that don't really affect blood sugar that you can subtract on Atkins. A couple of pieces is a lovely sweet treat! I get it from Boots - it is quite nice & cheaper & lower carbs than Atkins bars. I am at the stage now where I am sick of eggs for breakfast so it is mostly an Atkins bar for me for breakfast now!!

Join us on the WISH board - everyone is great over there - there are those that have loads of weight to loose - like me & others that just want to shift a few pounds!!

I am doing really well this week i have lost 6 pounds. I am eating eggs for breakfast, then for lunch chicken with a very small salad and for tea some other kind of meat.

Tonight we are having a take away kebab meat mmmmmm:Pinkbounc

I am snacking on cheese, and sugar free ice pops, but only a couple of these a day:bounce:

After 2 weeks we can start snacking on nuts:hyper:

Well thats it. 2 weeks of atkins and I had lost 4lb in the first week . (I need to lose a stone)

The 2nd week I read an article on lettuce which has put me off eating it for life !

So I've decided to come off it. I have now signed onto the local gym and am attempting weightwatchers the cheats way (without joining). There are no meets in my area at a time when I can go so I am stuck there.

The hardest part is knowing how many points are in what. I am still determined to do it and I've now got 2 months before we go so hopefully !!
