Can someone tell me how to put my dvd movies on my ipod touch? Is there a software I can use or do I just have to repurchase them from itunes?

TIA

Oh, and it has to be EASY I'm pretty computer illiterate?:goodvibes

Sadly, I don't think that there is an easy way. The movie studios are very concerned about DVD piracy, so they make it difficult to copy the movie off of a DVD and put it on anything else. The movie is "locked" on the DVD. There are programs that will unlock the movie, but they may be illegal in the US under the DMCA.

Even if you do unlock the DVD, the video format is incompatible with your iPod. You'll need another piece of software that translates DVD files (called .VOB files) into something that the iPod can understand.

My advice - make friends with a geek with a limited respect for the law.

I know of a couple ways, but I'm not sure if they're legal or not.

Also, if you buy a DVD with a Digital Copy included (It'll say on the cover/packaging if a digital copy is included), all you need to do is put the digital copy into your computer. Then, the movie should pop up in iTunes and you'll be able to put it on your iTouch. I have an iPhone and that works for me. The iTouch is the same way.

I just got the bluray version of Star Trek and it came with a digital copy that I was able to transfer to my laptop and iPod Touch.

Speaking as a geek with a healthy respect for the law, as far as I'm concerned, if I've already purchased the movie, there's no reason why I should not be able to rip it to be able to watch it on my own iPod. I'm not gaining any sort of profit off of someone else's work. I'm not selling bootleg DVDs of the movie, nor am I downloading the films illegally; I'm simply enabling myself to be able to enjoy a film for which I've already paid (sometimes in multiple formats...I've got several movies in VHS, DVD, and now digital files) in a different format when carting along a DVD player is either impractical or impossible.

That said, you need 2 pieces of software: one to decrypt the DVD, and one to convert it to .mp4 format so it is watchable on your iPod. I use DVD Decrypter and Handbrake, both of which are extremely easy to use and are available as free downloads. There are some types of software that will both decrypt and encode, but I've never had any success with any of them so I prefer to do it in 2 steps.

There's an extensive tutorial here, courtesy of ilounge.com. It discusses several different types of software that others commonly use to rip videos to their iPods; DVD Decrypter and Handbrake are the 2 that I've found easiest and most efficient to use with the least number of errors (audio out of synch, etc.)

If you're pressed for time or worried about copyright restrictions, you can always re-purchase them from iTunes. Occasionally, movies will be specially encrypted or just will end up being a PITA to convert; when that happens, I just suck it up and pay for the movie again. :) Sometimes it's worth the $9.99 not to have to deal with the hassle.

And hey, you can always ask for lots of iTunes gift cards for Christmas! :santa:

Ok, this cracked me up.:rotfl2: Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll look into the software recommended. I also think that if I purchased the dvd I should be able to put it on my ipod if I want. My son is getting a touch for Christmas and LOVES the Transformer movies. We own both of them and I want to put them on his ipod for him.

We used a piece of software called Cucusoft, I think. It isn't hard but it is time consuming. I think that it cost us about $30 to download it.

We tried Handbrake with our old computer. We never could get the whole movie to convert. With our new computer, it works just fine.

We also bought an external hardrive so that all the movies and music could be stored there.

I had the same issues with Handbrake on my old (Vista, 2 GB of RAM) computer as well; with my new (Win7, 4 GB of RAM) one, it works flawlessly. :)

I'm trying the decryptor/handbrake thing now. Looks like it's going to take a while. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks!

we use videora with dvd decrypter or dvdshrink. All freeware.

If you run into problems (dvd decrypter has not been updated in years), a good place to look for information is afterdawn.

Turn off autoplay on your computer also. Some unscrupulous companies were installing spyware on your pc without your knowledge. I think there was a lawsuit to stop this. We've kept ours turned off just to be safe.

I prefer DVD Shrink to DVD Decryptor. As for specially encrypted movies, you might consider AnyDVD by Sly Soft. It's not free, but it removes the protection from virtually every DVD and Blu ray.

I got experienced in ripping DVDs for two reasons. First, I store all of the movies we own on our network file server. This way, we can watch any movie at any TV or computer without fiddling around with discs. You just pull up the movie on the menu and it starts.

The other reason was that we added a DVD player to our van. The screens are in the back of the front seat headrests. I can't see them from the front. When we first added the DVD player, the kids were too young to figure out how to start each DVD. I made ripped versions that, when you put it in the player, just started playing the movie without any intervention.

Now, I also use handbrake to re-encode all of the movies for use on the kid's iPod touches and for the car PC. The car PC has essentially replaced the DVD player in the car. It has a copy of all of the movies and the kids can start them via a menu just like they can on the TVs and computers in the house. The videos are at lower resolution, but the car screens are relatively small, so they still look OK. The kids use their iPod Touches like mouse pads to control the car PC.

If you get anydvd, shut it off when not in use. If you restart your pc, find it and shut it off. I don't know how many times it has caused a conflict with other things for me. I do believe they have a 30 day free trial though.

I always use Pavtube DVD to iPod Converter.
This program features with its faster conversion speed, powerful customization options, advanced audio and video sync technology.
maybe you can try this

I also use this and would recommend it to you. It is VERY easy to use and is faster than other options I have tried (like using DVD Shrink and then converting to mp4 with Videro) because it is a one step process. I was hesitate about paying $30 for it but its well worth it IMO. Also, with DVD Shrink, once in awhile a movie couldn't be extracted but so far that hasn't happened with CuCusoft.

My brother (a computer geek) found Magic DVD Ripper that you can download as a free trial. It's supposed to let you only rip 5 dvd's, but if you don't close the program between dvd's it'll let you do as many as you want. I ripped 12. I will probably buy the program, though. It was very easy to use. It's not fancy, but it does the job. And this from someone who is not particularly computer literate.

Here's a link to the site:

Ive only read the first page but I use Magic DVD Ripper. You have to pay for it, You can use it for five times for free tho to try it out.
Anyway the program is SUPOR easy to use, and it will automatially rip it to your computer in ipod format. Theres other formats too but I always do for my ipod.
