How do I go about separating finances during a separation?

I have been officially separated since June, but STBX DH wanted me to leave finances as is. Since it worked in my favor as I pay all the bills, I agreed. Now I am ready to make the next step as his lack of communication and follow-thru is making things more stressful basically since I have been maintaining two households. He does not give me his bills, set some up for automatic draft but I don't know when or how much, and doesn't use his credit cards but his debit card for purchases as previously discussed. The problem is I am not filing for divorce until the end of the year, don't want to deal with that until after the holidays. However, I need to find a way to untangle our finances that have been so intertwined for years. I already established my own account, checking and saving and put part of my pay in there but his whole check goes into our joint checking and he uses that for whatever/whenever.

the only way to seperate finances is to close joint accounts and open new ones in seperate names. The problem your going to have is if you need his income, then the only way to get it once the finances are seperated is by court order or relying on him to do the right thing. I don't know if your situation allows you to do the latter or not.

one way is to have part of his paycheck moved to your acount every pay period. Then you write checks for your stuff from your account every time.
