How do I get upgraded?

I have booked category 10. How do I ask for free upgrades? Wait until check-in? Or try before?

Your cabin will be assigned before check in... if you haven't booked a GTY, it's probably already been assigned.

You will most likely sail in the category and cabin you already have. **Occasionally**, if there is space available in better categories, you can purchase an upgrade at the pier.

As far as a free upgrade- don't hold your breath. Book what you'll be happy sailing in. It seems that most upgrades happen when someone's booked a "guarantee" room, rather than a specific cabin number.

Cross your fingers and hope.

If you ask for an upgrade, you will may be offered one, for a fee. Free upgrades seem to come to those who are just plain lucky. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to getting one. But asking doesn't seem to be the ticket.

Some people believe early booking will help, but others have been upgraded with late bookings while earlier folks have gone un-upgraded. Booking a category rather than a room is another technique to improve your chances, but there are no guarentees.

Book the room you are happy staying in. If we could get free upgrades for the asking, why would anyone pay for a cat 6?

Cross your fingers? Pray?

Actually, it's never happened to us (free). Most seem random prior to cruise. It also seems that those without a specific stateroom assigned (GTY) have a better chance. I think some have asked and received at the port. We have asked at the port and were given an upgrade at a somewhat discounted rate. It seems that the lower priced staterooms get upgraded as the time approaches in an attempt to make lower prices available and quickly sell the ship full just prior to sail date.

Thanks for the info. I have booked specific cabin numbers because another family is traveling with us. We'll be just fine staying where we are, but it's like traveling on an airline, if you don't ask for free upgrade you don't usually get them.

Is the fee for an upgrate a the port the same as the difference between the prices if you would have booked in that cat originally? Or is it less? Thanks!

I booked my 4-night cruise on Saturday and asked how to obtain an upgrade.

I was told by DCL that is a random process (as far as the free upgrades). DCL has some sort of selection process that they use.

We booked a cat 7 with the cabin number last sept. Got our docs from Disney about 4 weeks out. 2 weeks from sailing got a call from TA that Disney had upgraded us to a cat 5. The new cabin was great. Now that we had the upgrade not sure if I want to go back. Loved the verandah. I guess it is hit and miss on upgrades. We were upgraded even tho it wasn't GTY. Seems to me that the cat 12, 11 and 10 were upgraded more often(report here on the DIS boards).

If you want to can ask at check in at the port and see if other cabins are available and at what cost. You never know, it may be in your price level.

We just got off the 3 Day Wonder cruise of Jan 29. We had booked and received a Cat 11 stateroom.
When we went to our room, it just reeked of cigarette/cigar smoke. It was so bad we couldn't stand it.
I called guest services requesting a cabin change and also for our friends if possible who were next door to us.
she said we would have to wait until 5:30 when they had the final cabin schedules.
At 5:35 she called and offered us new cabins. When I went down to check they were an upgrade to Cat 9 cabins. We took them, would have taken anything since the smell was so bad.
Even our room steward agreed with us, saying that he had tried to get the smell out but was not successful.
So that was how we got an upgrade this cruise.

We booked specific connecting cat. 8's for upcoming 2/21 Eastern. When we received docs we noticed both rooms changed. We were upgraded to connecting cat. 5's.

Don't know if this helped but we had booked on board last year with one room last year paid for with points from DVC.

Can't wait to have a verandah!

just wondering what cabin you had been assigned cat. 11 on the Wonder?? We are sailing next week in 7035... I don't care if we get upgraded or not but can't stay in a cabin with cig. smoke all weekend. I thought that disney did NOT allow smoking in the cabins? One of the reasons we booked an inside.

Thanks

We were originally booked into cabin 6069 and our friends had 6067.
6069 had a terrible smoke smell and 6067 had only a faint smell.
And you are correct Disney does not allow smoking in the cabins. According to the room host the smoking took place on the final night aboard the ship. If they smoked after the room had been turned down then nobody would have noticed until after they left and the host went to clean the room.
I would think that this would be a very isolated incident, not one that would happen on any regular basis.
It was our 5th cruise and the first time we have ever had a problem like this.

The best way to get an upgrade is to book the lowest cabin category you would be happy with and then cross your fingers and toes that you'll be upgraded. I've also heard you can walk backward three steps, turn around three times, then stand on your head and whistle "Dixie"!

Good luck!!!

Silly....Dixie isn't a Disney song. You need to whistle When You Wish Upon a Star.

That's the same thing I was wondering. If it was a discounted upgrade, I'd be really interested in it, but not for full price.
