go in December instead of January?

We just saw the WDW Christmas on the Travel Channel. How beautiful it is there during this time of year!

I asked my husband if we could take our first trip home there next December and he said it would be too cold and January would be better. We've been in February twice and have had perfect weather for swimming and walking around both times. Can you tell me if this was a fluke? Is it warm enough to swim in December without freezing when you leave the heated pool?

Not only seeing all the Christmas decorations, but being able to go 3 months earlier is a definate plus :p

Any advice?

Thanks!
Deb

A lot depends on how warm you need it to be to swim. Once you hit the middle of November all the way to the middle of March there are definitely no guarantees. We have been the first couple of weeks of December with sunny weather and highs in the low 80's. But we went Thanksgiving week one year and really froze with highs only in the 50's and 60's. Some family members went presidents week in February a couple years ago and they didn't get to swim at all because it never hit 70 degrees that whole time they were there. Like I said, it depends on what temperature is comfortable for you. Even though we are from the Midwest you won't find us in the pool unless it is in the upper 70's.

We have been 4 times in Dec. We have been swimming twice within those 4 trips. Once in 99 and once 2 weeks ago. Temps in 99 were in lower 80s. Temps this past trip were mid 70s. But the temps dropped a couple of days to 50s. Its hard to tell what the weather will be like this time of year in Orlando. Our mindset is its sunny Fla., its never cold there! But we have missed on that one a couple of times.

I would approach from the angle that WDW is a grand place all the time, but during Dec, while its all decked out for Christmas, it is truly magnificient! Thats why I love going in Dec. If you get to swim, well thats just icing on the cake!!

Good Luck
Jimmy

We usually go in January and have gone in December once, and plan to again next year. We usually have at least one swimming day in January. On our December trip a couple years ago, we had cool weather the first 5 days, but beautiful 80's the second 5 days. I would not say there is a significant difference in the weather between Jan. and Dec. If you have never been during the holiday season, I highly reccomend it!

I have visited WDW probably 20 times in early December and I think it is just perfect at that time of year. Of course, now I hear so do a lot of DVC members and that is why it is so hard to get into a DVC resort at that time.

Out of all those visits, I would say I had bad weather maybe 2 or 3 times at the most. One time it was warm, but rained all 10 days we were there. Luckily we were on our 2nd honeymoon at the Concierge GF Main Lodge and it wasn't a problem. We still had a wonderful time. Another time (I remember MGM just opened that year) it was in the low 40's and raining terribly. We were sooo cold we bought hats and mittens to get us thru the week. Other than that, it has been 75 to 80 degrees (definitely swimmable for us Easterners) every time and sunny as can be. So I would say the likelihood of you having good weather is pretty strong. And add on the gorgeous decorations and holiday events, December is a must see.

Hope this helps.

This year is our third December trip. It is a great time to go to "home". Every year we have been able to swim, but then again we swim in Maine in the summer so the water at WDW feels pretty good.

You guys worked your magic again!

After reading all your posts my husband gave the go ahead to book in December! We'll be joining in the "Who's coming December 04'" thread! We will probably head Dec 1 and stay 9 or 10 nights at OKW. We own at SSR, and I want to stay there, but husband really wants to stay at OKW. (I want to stay there also, its so hard to choose!) How could I say no? I'm just happy to go! :p

Just a quick question. In the past, how have airfares been during this time? It's at about 203.00 from California now, which is not bad. We got it really cheap in October for 180.00!

Anyways, I'll be booking at our 11 month window and then switching over at the 7 month. How exciting! Sorry to babble on.... I'm so excited to make our first reservations!

Thanks again :wave2:
