I am a repeat Disney vacationer. I've signed up for every little thing to get on "the list" for specials etc. I've rented DVC points and would be a member by now had DH not put the brakes on...

Anyhow, I'm planning visit number 8 and am pricing out staying at resort vs. renting points from DVC member. Just so you all know. If you charge $10 pp it's not worth it for a non dvc member to rent considering all the hoops you have to go through and the risks involved AND you don't get the daily housekeeping service for a savings of under $300?

I think Disney is making it more reasonable for the non dvc member to book through the Disney Corp??? That doesn't seem fair to the dvc owner who needs to rent their points or loose them? God forbid the DVC member be able to rent their points out if they need to?

Just MHO.
PS I'm still a Disney Freak, just a bit disappointed in "Big Brother" :guilty:

OK...I am confused....you are not a DVC owner, but are disappointed because it isn't worth it for you to rent points over a cash reservation???

Huh?? Why in the world would it bother you to stay on a cash reservation?? No one sets a rate for DVC members to "rent" out their points...several years ago you could "rent" points for $5 to 6 a point and now a lot of people are charging $10... next year someone may be able to get $12....who knows.

We have been DVC'ers for >10 years now and have yet to rent out a point to anyone....DVC makes no claim to anyone about the ability to "rent" out points...buy what you will use and then don't worry about it.

But in your case since you aren't even a member I remain clueless as to why this is even an issue for you....are you suggesting that Disney should raise resort prices so DVC members can rent out points easier?? Don't think you are gonna get a lot of support for that idea on this board!!

$300 saving can buy a lot of food for your stay. :Pinkbounc

ps. I had thought I could rent dvc points and save $ since we end up spending so much on the airfare, Disney tickets, lodging, car rental, food, souveniers etc... Year After Year.

Don't get me wrong. I'D LIVE IN DISNEY IF I COULD. I'm just trying to do the math? (and pay my mortgage) IF I were to be a DVC member my annual dues are a big consideration and IF God forbid I couldn't use my points???? i.e. death in family or something... I'd have a heck of a time getting them rented to someone trustworthy for $10pp and then to know I don't even own the points, It all reverts back to Disney when my time expires???

Now, IF I were to purchase DVC and couldn't use my points in two years, I think I'd be stuck?

Sincerely
Liz :confused3

I HEAR YA, I'M JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE ADVANTAGE OF BUYING DVC VS. GIVING THEM MY COLD HARD CASH EACH YEAR. EITHER WAY THEY GOT ME, I'M A PRISONER OF LOVE DANG NABBIT.

SURE DO WISH SOMEONE WOULD RENT OUT THEIR POINTS FOR $5 OR $6 THOUGH

I have crunched the DVC number several times. They have sweetened the pot with the AP discount. We have 5 in our family so that is significant.

I own 400 points at Saratoga Springs. Here is the reason it makes sense for my family. Disney is just a way of life for us so we might as well just bite the bullet and own a teeney little piece of the magic! You do pay a large amount at first. But if you spread out what you pay over many years of vacations you will see that in the long run you are staying at a deluxe level resort for less than what a value can cost. And I am locked into the price I paid. Meaning points at SSR are higher now than when I bought a year ago but I am still paying my original price. And don't forget, values, moderates and deluxes will all go up many times throughout the next 50 years. I financed 80% of my points thru Disney and in 10 years I am paid off. I own my interest in SSR for 50 years, then yes, they go back to Disney. I'll be 90 so at that point so I'm okay with that! After my points are paid off, I will have monthly HOA dues (around $160 a month right now for us with our amount of points) but thats it. I know we will never not use our points. They go quicker than you think. You can bank points if you think you won't use them and you can borrow points from the next year. You get many discounts at WDW. Also at some point (I know its not gonna happen but for the sake of discussion) if we get sick of Disney we can use them someplace else, Hawaii, Europe, many places. You pay $10 to rent, but the value of my points for me is around $5.50 a point. So if I want to stay at studio at SSR in October, its around 11 points per night. That is around $60 a night, a very good deal. When we had our first stay at "home" in October I knew my family had made the right choice, I wish we had done it years ago and saved a bundle! For you it just might not be the right thing however. It is confusing and if you have a lot of questions, I would go over to the DVC board and ask the experts.

Hate to tell you but that won't happen! Many posts I have read over on the DVC board feel the $10 a point is too low and makes it way too easy for people to rent points and enjoy the DVC resorts without the cost and commitment owners pay. I would never rent points to anybody but family because that is way too low in my book.

I've not been able to rent points as low at 10$ a point...more like 13.

My cost is $6.65 a point - and I purchase resale and didn't finance and I am spreading the purchase price evenly across all the remaining years. Asking for points for $5 to $6 is asking for points at below the members cost - totally unreasonable. If you don't think it is worth saving $300 to "jump through hoops", the owners sure don't think it is worth "jumping though hoops" to lose money!

I have a question. I looked at renting points for our week in December and it's a lot cheaper renting a room for the four of us. Am I missing something that other people are renting at cheaper than actually just getting a room? Or is it just cheaper if you have more than four people?

Sorry, I didn't mean "renting" a room I meant reserving a regular room. I know obviously that there are differences between the two. But I've seen some people say that they are saving so much money by renting points instead of reserving a room at the resort. I wasn't asking what the difference is, I was just curious if there were people that actually got good deals from renting points.

It's not a "ROOM"! It's an experience! :cloud9: It's our Home Away from Home! :goodvibes

It's a situation where you either get or Not! It's just DD and I that travel and believe you me, it's nice that she has her part of the Villa and I have mine! :rotfl: :rotfl: Oh and that Tub! Great way to unwind after a long day at the Parks! Oh and getting up and having a decent cup of coffee right away! Having a decent breaky right away!

Different Strokes for Different Folks!

Oh and the best thing, no bill at the end of your stay! Unless, of course you charge something extra!

just my 2 cents worth!

Oh and as for renting points, I can't seem to get enough for myself!LOL

I look at renting points as a "fire sale" sort of situation. We have been members since 1997, and have never needed to rent out points. With banking and borrowing, it really isn't necesary very often. A lot would depend on the buyer researching exactly how many points they need and buying that amount. Of course, if you go every year and like sharing the magic, you will quickly discover you need more! ;)

First of all, if you look at DVC as a "room" you are missing the whole point of timeshare ownership. You need to look at it as a villa. That means a 1,2, or 3 bedroom unit with a full kitchen, jacuzzi tub, in unit laundry, living room, etc, etc. Most of us don't even LIKE mousekeeping, much less expect it. If all you want is a "room", stay at All Star. Those who only stay in studios, are missing the whole point of timeshare ownership.

Second, I only think you should buy if you can do it without financing. That doesn't mean you have to have all the money up front, but maybe at least be able to get a home equity loan for it. That way, your "prepaid vacation" doesn't end up costing so much more in interest rates. The maintenance dues are there for all your services and to assure that the resort will always be in top condition.

Sure, it's only a "lease", but it is a 50 year lease that can be willed to your children or anyone you choose. Most of us only want to prepay our own vacations, and aren't sure our offspring will want to continue the tradition, so it really doesn't matter. Besides, for me, I'll be in my mid 90's when mine expires.....don't much care.

Disney makes it very clear in their contracts that going into the business of renting points may not be "wise." There are people who rent points as a business, personally, I think its a lot of work for miniscule profits - even at $10 and especially for recent SSR owners who paid $90 per point!

If I needed to "fire sale" my points for some reason, I'd only look to recoup my dues - around $4.50 or something per point. But I have about twenty friends and relatives on a list with "call me if you can't use your points" so I doubt they'd ever hit the rental board.

The other thing I firmly believe is that DVC ownership is not a good decision for someone without financial cushion. If I need to cancel a trip last minute and "waste" the points, it won't break me.

When considering DVC - either from a point rental standpoint or from a ownership standpoint, compare what you are buying fairly. If you give a big value to daily maidservice, it may not be worthwhile. If you love having a kitchen and your kids sleeping in a different room, it may be even if its more expensive. There are (apparently) great timeshares in the Orlando area for MUCH cheaper, but DVC members are willing to pay more for on-site. If you are renting, the cancellation policies through CRO may be much more attractive and renting points may not represent a savings.

Finally, no one is forced to buy DVC or to rent points. It is what it is and it costs what it costs. It is either worth it to you or its not. And just because its worth it to me doesn't mean it is worth it to you.

Frankly, $10pp is too cheap. It should be at least $12. Also, you are thinking very one sided. What about the risks involved with renting points?

There is no perfect world.

If you want my honest opinion, you should have bought 10 years ago. :cloud9:

With a lot of the AP discounts going away or shortening, renting has been very desirable.

We are looking into renting points for a trip next fall. Based on my calculations,
if we rent them at $10 per point, we will be saving money based on what
WDW charges.

I must be missing sonething. $5 or $6 a point! It should be around $15, $10 is way too low IMHO. DVC is not right for everyone. We've owned since it started, 1991, and have never rented out our points, nor have we rented additional points from other members. I can't see why anyone would think that DVC members should "give away" their points. Not everyone can afford everything. I know that might sound somewhat harsh, but as others have said points are up around $90 now. The purchase price has gone up, so the price to rent should go up too, not down. The wonderful thing about Disney is that they have many different resorts for many different people. There are so many options for people. I tell people to consider all options, even (gasp) offsite. Maybe something else would work better for you.

One other question for you DVC folks. We are in our early 60's. We would
definitely consider buying, but I'm afraid we wouldn't get to take advantage
the number of years if you get my drift. We're both healthy and active now,
but who knows?

The way I figure it is...if a week-day night is 12 pts. (lower end of the scale!) then you are paying $120 per night to stay at a very deluxe resort!!! You might be able to get POR for that amount of money. I can't imagine what 'hoops' you have to go through to rent points. Sure, the renter of the points needs the monies paid pretty much up front before releasing the reservation, but who can blame them?? It's way to easy to get burned when renting out pts to a complete stranger. A comparable room would cost close to $300!!! DVC isn't out there to make it easy for non-DVC people to rent pts. That's something each owner does as they see fit. It's never going to be an issue for me...I'm already into my 2007 pts!!!
If someone is having an issue with $10 per pt., then they may be better off staying at a value resort for $80 a night. Don't get me wrong....I love the values, but if I had a choice I'ld be at BWV anyday!!!

And to Tumbleweed....I think it's about 10 trips of about 6 days for me to make my 200 pts. pay off. I figure it's about $1800 per trip (6 nights at $300 per night). Only you can decide if that is worth it to you. As for me...I'm on trip number 5...only 5 more to go and it has paid for itself. Of course, that doesn't take into account the maint. fees and dues every year. I guess that adds a bit on, but I figure that's a meal out a week for us that we forgo.
