How did your 4-5 year old like cruising?

Thank you everyone for your replies! I am sure DS3 will love it since he is already a Disney Addict! Here is my next question...Did you make sure your kids were relatively strong swimmers before you went? I feel like so much of the cruise is around water and beaches, we want to make sure he is safe around water. (I'm embarrassed to say that we --DH and I--have never been in ANY of the pools...)

Our ds4 at the time was not a swimmer at all! He's taken swim lessons, so he was somewhat comfortable in the water. We just stayed in the splash area, and near the edge of the pool while I was in the water w/him. He did go down the Mickey slide once...and said water went up his nose, and didn't want to go on it anymore! Now that he's 15, he's on the swim team and water polo team at his school, and loves the water!

Our ds2 at the time just played in the little splash area. We had little cups for him to just fill it w/water and pour it out/over him/over mommy kinda thing. And he was content!

And they both really enjoyed our day at cc!!! Digging in the sand, splashing near the water, and I rode on the inner tube w/4 yo sitting on me...but I didn't do that w/our 2 yo b/c I just wasn't comfortable w/that idea just yet.

Whatever your comfort level is, should be your guide. I was (still am, even though the boys are really good swimmers now) just crazy nervous around water when it comes to children! B/c I know how quickly water fun can turn disastrous...

I am also crazy nervous around water--and we have a pool! and completely agree with you...what is fun can quickly become disastrous...(reason we have so many rules about being around the pool-even for guests which makes us unpopular at times and I'm ok with that!) Anyway,Sounds like the splash area has plenty to offer even if we haven't earned our fins yet...

What is the price per hour for kids clubs? Looking on the website and having a hard time finding that.

I am not sure about the pricing, b/c this was like 10 yrs ago, when our 2yo needed to be in nursery reef, while our 4yo was in kids club. The kids club (oceaneer club?) was free. The nursery reef, we had to pay..maybe $6 (or $12?) an hr. I seriously cannot remember!!! I'm sure others who's cruised recently will know..

The last time we cruised (Alaska), our boys kids club (oceaneer lab and the teen one..edge?) were free.

my kids were 1 1/2 and 4 when we sailed on the magic...the 4 year old talked about the Mickey Boat regularly since. We are sailing again next month...they will now be 4 and turning 7...they are BEYOND excited. the 1 1/2 year old does not remember but my 7 year old does remember going when he was 4.

The kids clubs (ages 3 and up) are included in the cruise fare. The nursery for kids under 3 is $9/hr.

Must've been $6 an hr when we went (and used their service) so long ago. I guess I was recalling $12 b/c we booked it for 2 hrs for our palo dinner! :flower:

Our 2 tiny grand-princesses went on their first ever Disney Cruise with us and their parents to Alaska a couple of years ago when they had just turned 3 & 5. The little one was in the final stages of potty training so not eligible for Oceaneer Club,

How did I not know this??? I hadn't even considered that my son needs to be potty trained for this. I know my cruise is still far away but omg I hope he is potty trained in time!!!!

Yes, it was $6 until sometime within the last year, I believe. Wish that was still the case, although that was definitely a bargain!

I don't believe this is still the case. I'm pretty sure they are now required to take all kids if they meet the age requirement. However, CMs do not change diapers or help with toileting. There is a thread on this board with lots of info from a CM where I believe this is addressed.

WOW! Where can you get good care for either $6/hour or free! Crazy... Ok other than swimming, did anyone have a favorite non-club, non-excursion, favorite activity --either child or family activity in the navigator, cool thing you found in port that was off the beaten path...Ready? Go!

SailingScout, after your post that DCL is "now required to take all kids if they meet the age requirement", I went searching because this is very important information to lots of mamas & daddies if it's true. I could not find any information substantiating this though it may be true. I tried calling DCL but they had closed a half hour prior. Here's a quote from www.wdwinfo.com which is the host of these forums, that says kids must be 3 y.o. and fully potty trained to participate in the kids clubs:

"Parents and children must check-in and out at the desk and security is of the utmost importance here. The Oceaneer Club is for children 3 to 12 years of age and they must be toilet-trained."

Here's the link to the page for Oceaneer Club:

If anyone can find where this policy has changed recently it would be most helpfull

I love karaoke! Not good at it, sings off key, and randomly belts out lyrics that "sounds" like the real lyrics...and my family tolerates my singing...

Ok...that being said...we went to a family karaoke night! It was so much fun! They had many Disney movie tunes that the boys were familiar w/...and my 2 yo loved dancing around on the floor, w/the lights swirling and such!

The boys also enjoyed lounging on those chairs that were along the side on one of those decks where the walking tracks were. Just to soak in the view/ocean and they were able to run around a bit w/out much crowd around.

Another thing the boys enjoyed was being up on the sports deck where we kinda explored the area. It wasn't busy there at the time!

Our boys also enjoyed having treats (ice cream, afternoon snacks, etc) at those tables off to the side by the pool deck..

This was all so long ago for us. Now, our/their fun is a bit different.. :flower:

First of all, you are unlikely to get reliable information from the DCL 800# unfortunately.

The kids were 3 & 5 on our first cruise. DS5 loved the club & would have stayed there 24/7 if we had let him. DD3 didn't care for it, but also cried at drop off for preschool. She was more interested in spending time with daddy, who was away on business travel often. We went to the movies, went to the pool early in the morning & after walking around the ports a short time. She had the pool to herself for a while. She enjoyed getting ice cream, seeing the characters, going to the dance parties, tropical deck party [before the pirate party], and just walking around the ship exploring. They were both very excited when they found out we would be going back in a year. DD kept telling everyone she was going to marry Ruby [Rudy, our server] and live on the Mickey boat. :) Her experience with the CMs & characters [especially Cinderella, who was on a first name basis with her after day 2] made such an impression on her that she started talking in preschool. Our first cruise was an eastern because we wanted more sea days and weren't interested in doing excursions since the kids were so young. A western was the next, and then we just went with whatever was happening when we could cruise.

When my daughter was 2 1/2 we loved Wake Up With Disney Junior, or something like that. It's held in the mornings in one of the lounges and is basically a Cast Member leading the kids in Disney Junior songs and dances. I can't wait to do it with my son who will be 2 1/2 on our next cruise.

Oh - and my daughter was one of the younger ones - there were lots of 4 and 5 year olds there.

My kids have both cruised most of their lives, on DCL and other lines (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.) Both prefer DCL. We feel like DCL does the best overall job with babies, toddlers, and young children, although there were things we really liked about both other lines with kids. Honestly, we felt like almost 3 was the hardest age to cruise with kids with, because they could see all the things the 3 year olds could do in the kids club, but they weren't allowed full access. (We ended up getting lucky with our almost 3 year old fully potty independent DD, and being given full access to the Oceaneer's Club and Lab, but I understand they aren't doing that much if at all any more.) DD had loved the nursery when she was almost 2, but she hated it as an almost 3 year old year. She always loved the Oceaneer's Club and Lab during Open House hours, and then once she got access. DS was not potty trained right at 3, so we actually took a break from cruising, because we knew people who had cruised with a not potty trained 3 year old, who was not allowed in unattended in kids club. They did not have a good cruise.

Caribbean ports we have done with children 5 and under on various cruises, most of these at least 2 or 3 times:

Cozumel - we always do Chankanaab with young kids; the dolphin interaction is great, the sea lion show is fun, and they love the beach and tidal pools. We went to the mainland a lot before we had kids, but the ferry ride can be rough, so while they're young, we're sticking with Chankanaab. (DS requests it every time because he adores it.)

Roatan (Honduras) - beach break plus island tour that included a stop at the bird and monkey park. I would do this again. But occasionally the monkeys bite, including someone on our tour (an adult.) We loved Tabyana beach - it's fantastic shallow water snorkeling, and we've done it twice.

Belize City - Altun Ha ruins and wildlife spotting on the Old River. (We did Lamanai and the New River before we had kids.) If you take kids to ruins, you have to expect you won't hear the guide's entire spiel. They will wander off when the guide talks too long in one place, and you will have to follow them. Even so, we found it interesting and worthwhile. By age 8 my son wanted to climb the pyramid, so one of us had to go with him and the other had to stay with the little one.

Costa Maya - We split the party here. DH and I went to ruins; DD stayed in kids club; DS went with DM to a fairly nearby beach. Everyone had a great time. My DM didn't think she could manage both kids alone at the beach, and DD absolutely loved being in kid's club, so splitting up was a good solution for us.

Jamaican - left the then toddler on the ship with DM; DH and I went to Dunn's River Falls. I won't do Jamaica without staying on a tour, and I'm not eager to take the kids off the ship here. DH and I have been a couple of times, and enjoyed it very much, but didn't feel like it was little kid friendly.

Key West - First time DM took DS through town while DH and I kayaked. Second time we walked around town and did the aquarium. The aquarium is old and not in the best shape, but DS got to feed and pet a shark. He loved it so much he wants to do it again next time we go.

Grand Cayman - Once we did an island tour that included a glass bottom boat ride and the Turtle Farm. The glass bottom boat ride was awful. Too long standing around in a too hot line, then being crowded on a too hot boat. The turtle farm was fun, and we could see that there was more than the first tour had us do. The second time we just went to the turtle farm, and did the full adventure park that includes the big pool, the snorkel area, and the aviary. I would like to go to stingray city, but the kids haven't been ready to try it yet.

Nassau - Again, we split the party. We left DD on the ship in kid's club; DM went snorkeling; DH, DS (8 by then), and I did chocolate making. We all had a great time. I really thought about Atlantis, and will probably do it next time with go, but DD is our daredevil who adores water slides, and she was going to be too little to do all the slides she loves so much.

Castaway Cay - We got a cabana. We all loved it. We would probably have had an equally fabulous time without a cabana.

We've also done 2 weeks in the Mediterranean with a 5 year old, but I don't think those ports are as relevant to the current discussion. I will say, it was a great trip. A lot of our friends thought we were crazy to take a 5 year old on a Mediterranean cruise, but we all loved it. I did have to work hard to pick activities in port that would appeal to a child, but it was completely worth it.

4 or 5 is a great age for cruising. We've got one cruise planned for later this year, and actually have been contemplating a second. You will love it!

I will search and try to find where I remember reading it on the forums, but hopefully someone with experience can confirm or deny.

On our first DCL cruise - 4 nights on Wonder, our DD was 4. She ditched us most nights for the kids club. I was freaking out a little on the inside, but we checked in every couple of hrs so (more for our sanity)... she knew we were around, but other than that - she thoroughly enjoyed her vacation. We couldn't have been more proud and happy that she was able to enjoy herself. So much so, it prepared us for cruise #2, where she pretty much ditched us again for the kids club at 8 yrs old. Cruise 3 is coming aug 2016, and she'll be a tween- 12 yrs old *cringe* - it will be interesting to see if she'll be as excited about the Edge club.
