How did you tell your kids?

I think a big box with balloons that will float out is the way to go. party:

Balloons sound like fun. I would have loved to have gotten a box filled with balloons that float up when I was a kid. It would also be neat to put a note inside one of the balloons. The kids could pop that one, and it would say where they were going. Or you could write letters or words on the balloons, so you have to line them up to read the message. Depends on age of kids. Lots of potential for different ideas with balloons.

Popping the balloons made me think.

Has anyone thought of doing a piñata? You could fill it with Disney themed candy, little toys, Disney coupons or dollars, and confetti. You could even put a note inside saying something about going to Disney. That would be neat. Piñata so would be easy to incorporate into lots of different holidays or birthdays, or one could just magically appear from one of the Disney characters to your kid.

I love the surprising on Christmas idea. We are going early February and I've been torn over whether to do it in December to give them a little over a month to be excited, or if I want to just have DD#2's birthday party the week before we leave (we will be celebrating her birthday at WDW but could throw a small party before we leave if we decide to hold off on telling them). Either way, I think a big box with balloons that will float out is the way to go. party:

It was definitely fun to tell at Christmas. Plus we had the advantage of using that to give them a lot of the 'souvenir' type things I wanted to get them but going a month after Christmas we otherwise might have had to skip due to funds ;) Other than Disney stuff they only got one other gift. If they hadn't known about Disney I couldn't have used that as an opportunity to give them their Disney stuff. We left for our trip January 31 :) and every child is different but my kids are like me, they love the planning and anticipation. I felt like the excitement of going was prolonged by telling them in advance too, they got a whole month + to be excited about it and it was just long enough without being too long where they would feel like it was forever away.
