How Did You Get Your Pet?

I would never buy from a breeder. My little fur babies were rescued from breeders and were found in deplorable conditions. Funny how not one dog had any proof they were "pure bred". Anything can be created now days on a computer, huh?

I have always owned dogs that have been rescued. Besides, I don't have papers to show I am a "pure bred" so why should my dogs? And from what I understand, dogs can't read those papers anyway, just teedle on them! ;)

Our two cats are brother and sister and came from the local animal shelter. They were under-fed and had ear mites when we got them, and smelled just terrible. We paid $40 each, which included spaying/neutering, first shots and an initial vet visit. They have turned out the be great pets.

Good luck finding a pet!

After I had to have my beloved 10-year old indoor cat put to sleep because of cancer in her spine I thought it would be a long time before I wanted another cat.

My DD had a 9-month old kitten she had been trying to find a home for. She had saved the kitten when it was born outside, in the cold and brought it and the mother inside. She knew she couldn't keep the kitten though, as she already had two indoor cats and really didn't need/want a third so twice she tried to give it away. Both times the person said they would take the kitten, but then something happened that they didn't.

My DD kept after me to "give the cat a try." So, one afternoon I let her bring it down. I expected the cat would need a couple of days at least to get herself aclamated to the house, but that very afternoon she spent 3 hours sleeping on my lap. I called DD and said "the cat has a new home." :)

That was about 3 years ago now. She's my sweet, lovable, affectionate kitty, the same one in my signature picture. :)

I have two daschunds, one from a rescue group and one came with the house we bought last yr. Good doggies, glad to have them. Our pound has pits and pitbull mixes also, lots of them, but they also have lots of other types also.

My Duke was a Hurricane Charlie dog. My sister lost her home during Charlie. She had 3 dogs and she couldn't take them all with her when she found a new place to live. We took Duke in temporarily. About 2 weeks after Duke came here, my sister and her husband told us it looked like they were going out of their home for about a year, and they didn't think it would be fair to my DD if they then took Duke back.

So Mommy's little fur baby is now a king in this house. :cloud9:

We got our golden, Sunny, at the local humane society as a puppy. Her picture is in my siggie. She's mixed with something because she's kind of small for a golden but no one knows what. :)

I used to have a springer spaniel that we got from another family that weren't taking care of her. My ex was an MP and kept getting calls about a loose dog. He picked her up several times, then offered to buy her and they sold her right away. I think we paid $25. Money well spent.

We also had a malanois/German shepherd mix that my ex got from a friend. My ex is a K9 cop and one of the police dogs was bred with a German shepherd (accidentally!) so we got her for free. She was really a wonderful dog--I miss her a lot.

Rescue. Was an abused pup.

We also have one quick cat running around that was another rescue.

We purchased our awesome dog from a toy fox terrier breeder and we love Lucy so much. I did a lot of research before we acquired her so we were not surprised with any traits. She is perfect.

From a shelter- North Shore Animal League on L.I.

he was actually a dog from a shelter in hurricane Katrina area.

I watch the TV show about North Shore every Sunday!

My dog Demo came from a Tow Truck - no kidding. I was working at a pet store and a mand came in asking if we knew anyone who wanted a dog. He wasn't allowed to have pets in his apartment and his landlord found out that he had a dog. He was given the choice to either get rid of the dog or find a new apartment and at the time the vacancy rate was <1%. I really wanted a dog but my boyfriend didn't want one and it was HIS house after all but I went out to the truck to play with the dog and fell in love Immediately! I begged the boyfriend and he finally agreed after he met Demo. That was 5 years ago!

The whole time I owned Demo, I was a student so he was never home alone for very long. When I graduated from University and had to get a real job he got really lonely so we decided to get him a pet to keep him company. We went to the Humane society one day after work and picked out Maximus. We put him "on hold" for the evening to go pick up the supplies for a kitty and the next day after work we rescued him.

Both of our beagles came from a breeder.
Unfortunately my area shelters are overrun with pit bull mixes and that would cost me my homeowner insurance :( They also have a lot of big dogs, which would not be suitable for my family.

And the shelters actually cost more money to adopt than my purebred puppies. That's pretty sad considering how overcrowded they are :(

I don't think DH and I would be able to get a rescue dog. Most rescue orgs are as strict as human adoption agencies. Since DH and I both work, we'd be considered unfavorable candidates according to the rescue coordinators I have spoken to.

our current Golden Retriever, and our previous Golden Retriever (gone to the Rainbow Bridge 4 years ago) both came from rescue. Those two dogs are the best dogs I've ever had. My current kitty was adopted through a local agency, as well.

My two ferrets are both adopted from a ferret shelter. One of the reasons I adopt from this particular shelter which is 1100 miles from my home is that they test for ADV, a virus that you could describe as feline luekemia for ferrets. Many don't test, and unlike feline luek, there is no vax for ADV, so I don't want to bring an untested or positive ferret into my home.

I think when adopting an animal from a shelter it's important to find a good shelter who knows the personalities of the animal and doens't adopt to someone because they want a certain color, rather matches personalities.

Both of our yellow labs we bought from breeders out in the rural areas somewhat close to us.

We'd gotten several pets from places like Pet Rescue and the Humane Society, and they just never seemed to work out at all. The animals were either "sold/donated" to us sick or had serious temperment issues.

However, I did rescue a local lab that was found in my neighborhood and, in my search to find it a good home, I came across specific breed rescues/shelters, one of which was able to find a good home for the dog we found. I would absolutely consider checking those types of organizations out before just going straight to a breeder next time.

While pit bulls would not be my pet of choice, I must say that all dogs have the potential to show aggression and bite. They have teeth and a brain the size of a small fruit or vegetable. I've been bitten by dogs with a good temperment and been licked for a half-hour by dogs most would consider mean. You just never know.

Jasmine is a Yorkie/Maltese Mix we got her from a breeder in Missouri. Drove 5 hours each way too pick her up. She weighed 1 lb when we got her at 6 weeks old. She is 10 months old today and weighs a big 7.8 lbs.
I can't imagine life without her!!!!

How precious. Our pup is a toy fox terrier/chihuahua mix and was 1.6 lbs. when we got her and is now 7 lbs. (where is will stay). Lucy has a 50 lb. dog attitude in a little body.

Previous to our current dog we had Siberian Huskies one at a time. Both were from a breeder. The dog we have now was left in a football equipment shed. DH was on the board of our local youth football league. At the board meeting the cheerleading coach came in and said she had just been to the shack to drop off some uniforms, when she entered she heard something got scared and left. DH and his friend went to check it out after the meeting. What they found was a tiny puppy shivering in the January cold. Of course DH bought him home I didn't want another dog we already had the husky. We tried to find a home for him but he is a pit mix no one wanted him. Seven years later he's still here. He is a good dog no complaints. I just really miss having a husky love their personalities but won't get another at this time two dogs are too much for me.

We got our kitty from the Humane Society. She was at Petsmart when we got her since they hold adoption fairs every Sat. I picked her because her eyes and coat are the same orange color. I fell it love with her and couldn't wait to take her home. We've had her for about 3 months now and couldn't imagine not having her in our home.
