How common are split stays?

Does anyone stay at a value or mod for the majority and then finish or switch to a deluxe for a day or two? How exactly does this work? Does Disney transport luggage to a different resort for you? I feel like I can't make a decision staying at 2 resorts in one week.

We stayed at POP for two nights and then transferred to Wilderness Lodge for eight nights. We were at WL through our timeshare and didn't want to fork out the $$ to stay there an extra two nights. Disney transferred all of our luggage. We left it with bell services in the morning, went to the MK and headed to WL later in the day and checked in and then went to Epcot. Easy peasy.

But, unless you are planning to spend time at the deluxe to enjoy the amenities, I don't know if I would bother. If you are going to be at the parks most of those two days, I don't see the point in a split stay.

Split stays are the best! Disney transfers luggage for you, just drop it off in the morning at bell services, then pick it up when you arrive at your other resort. (we always get our own luggage rather than waiting for bell services to drop it in our room, we can usually get it quicker that way).

We do split stays all the time. I love staying at a different hotel, you get a different 'feel' during the same vacation.

We splurged on our 25th anniversary and split our stay between AKL & GF concierge. We actually decided to transport our own bags and just took a cab over. Went smoothly, and loved the thrill of pulling up to the GF front door! We definately would split our stay again. BTW, we enjoyed AKL much better.

Most of our trips have been split stays for a variety of reasons. We don't mind it all. However, you do have to recognize that it will take some time out of your vacation (packing/repacking, checking-in again, transportation, etc.) I wouldn't recommend it for staying on WDW property if you are just staying for 1 or 2 nights. I would suggest doing an equal split if it is on property.

We are split staying from Contemporary to Poly. Can't we just take our own luggage on the monorail?

No... can't take luggage on monorail or the buses.
Just wake up and call bell services - they'll come get your bags and transfer them to the next resort. They always say bags arrive around 3-ish - has been earlier - so just bring a backpack with bathing suits or stuff like that you may need.

Thanks for that! I will use my carry-on for those essentials. Our moving day is also our pool day so we definitely need a few things to make our day more pleasant!

We did our first split stay a couple of years ago, and now I don't know if I will ever not do one. We love it. I wouldn't stay for less than two nights in a resort though. It's easy to do. Just take your bags to bell services, as people said, and then check in to the new hotel. Your bags will follow. We have gotten to the new hotel by bus, monorail, even walked, depending on what resorts you are staying at. We spend the most time on our vacations at Epcot and the MK, so split between resorts at those two areas. Usually one of us takes our son to a park, while the other goes and checks in and takes the carryon bag. It takes a little planning, but we have never felt that it is a pain to do. It really gives us the sense of having two different vacations. Plus, we get to try out more resorts!

I like split stays. Bell Service makes it easy. I was nervous the first time but, airfare was much cheaper to arrive a day early and stay value. Since then I've done it four times.

I've only done a one nighter though. Its great because you check out and drop your bags off. You go off for the day and do what you want, then check in at the new resort. Luggage shows up.

You should make a decision according to your own conditions, the opinions of others just give your some reference.

I think while we are in commando mode it would make more sense to stay at a value, while finishing up at a nicer place and being able to leave with a memory of the nicer resort.

I guess I was asking how and what (2 hotels) others have done. I love that guest services will do the moving part. So easy.

Thanks to all who replied.

We did a strategic split in april. I do not enjoy WDW buses- monorails are fine though soooo. We stayed 3 nights at Contemporary so we could walk or monorail to MK or monorail to EPCOT , GF (we like breakfast at Park Fare), Polynesian (love dinner at Ohana). Then on Transition day we called bell service sucked it up and took bus to animal kingdom when done we headed to Boardwalk and walked the next 4 days to HS and EPCOT. We usually rent a car ,but with this trip being over easter car rates were horrible. I did find splitting the stay like this worked great and solved my issue with bus transportation.

If we have a car we split just to experience different hotels it definitly gives you that excitement of starting your trip over again when you move to a new place.
