How close to arrival can you switch resorts?

I am due to arrive on Feb 27th, 2021. But I am waiting on my mom to make her final decision if she is going or not. She had her own room which a few of my kids are sharing (our rooms only sleep 4). So if she doesn't go we will need to switch to another resort with a bigger room. The problem is she is still saying "we can wait and see", which is annoying. Everyone knows in the next 30 days people won't all be vaccinated. Any idea on what we can and can't do?

It depends on hotel availability for the room type you need. You might be better off booking a backup now and cancelling it once plans are final. Disney has waived cancellation and change fees up to the day of check in through April.

Rooms and Packages
To provide additional flexibility, we are waiving Disney-imposed change and cancellation fees up to the date of check-in for reservations with arrivals through April 30, 2021.

If I booked a backup wouldnt I have to pay it in full 30 days out still? Thanks for responding by the way. =)

If it's a package, yes I think so. If it's room only you pay one night for a deposit.
From my experience, this is correct.

Since they've provided the flexibility of not having cancellation fees, I've both changed and cancelled several reservations within the 30 day period. If it's through a package, you'll have to call within the 30 day window, but you will be given a full refund if you cancel (or a refund of the difference if your room/package change is less than your previous total and you've paid in full). If it's a room only reservation, you can cancel online and you'll be refunded the full deposit. I've done this a couple times as close in as a week (as I've ended up finding better deals renting a confirmed DVC reservation) and I've been refunded every time.

My husband and I had a trip, when our son was a junior in high school. He said he couldn’t miss a week of school as it’s so much work to make up. Well....2 weeks before we left, he decided to go. I called and they helped me change resorts, and gave him free dining like we had. They were great working with us.

Last week I changed our last night (for tomorrow) to move to a different resort with no problem. I just had to pay for that last night at the time I booked it. My original booking was a room only.

(I had to call though, for some reason the modify button disappeared a few weeks ago.)
