How can Disneyland close during the day?

Disneyland closed a few days ago at 4 P.M. for a "major private event". My question - how do they handle the paying customers, oops excuse me - guests, for that day? Pro rated ticket prices or what? Also what about those people that have a multi day pass?

Regular guests are allowed in the park until normal closing hours. A park ticket does not entitle the holder to x hours in a day, simply admission that day.

I believe the reason Disneyland closed early the other day (I think it was 5pm) was due to a Cast Member Recognition event.

California Adventure was still open.

Park Hours are typically released 6 weeks in advance allowing guests to plan accordingly.
