We have a lot of friends who seem to be building houses out of their price range. A lot of them seem to be House-rich and Cash-poor...

None of our friends seem to be able to completely FINISH their houses. There always seems to be something that they can't afford to do yet.

So it got me to wonder...How Big are the average houses here on the DIS and How many people live in your house...??? :confused3

1800 square feet. 3 bedrooms. 2.5 baths. small-ish yard. Built new 7 years ago

I love my house! It's just right. (we're poor, but not house poor, we're "oh crap we like to spend money" poor)

BTW, mine is a little above 1250 and we are 2 people and 2 cats...We also have a storage and we don't count the garages...

Family of 5 here (Mom, Dad, 16yo DS, 9yo DD, and 3yo DS) in a 4br, 2 bath, 2000sf house. Would like something bigger but we got this house for such a good price there's no way we'll be moving any time soon. :teeth:

1054 sq ft. Me, DH, DS, a cat and a dog.

1850 sq. ft. 3 bd, 2 ba, & bonus room. It's just me, DH, and Bogart (the dog). Housing in SC is really inexpensive though. A lot of times money is stretched thin, but it is a good investment, if we were to sell it today we would already have a lot of equity in it and we've only lived here less than 5 months.

LOL, Sam, I really have no idea. When we bought our house, when we were married, back in '71, people did not talk about square feet of their homes, but usually how many rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. I do think, from what I can gather, ours is something under 2,000 feet, maybe like 1,800 or so. I really have no idea. I do know that today though, people do seem fixated on the footage, how big, how huge. Some of the homes built today look like lodges, resorts, LOL. :confused3 :lmao:

DH, DS(2) and I, plus DD on the way!!

We live in a 1040 sq ft ranch, 3 bdrm 1 bath (plus an extra toilet in the utility room in the basement that since I wouldnt use EVER I dont count :rotfl: ). We do have a walkout which means about 75% of our basement is finished and usable.

Last July we sold our first house, it was a 730 sq ft ranch - WOW was that tiny!!

Our home was 2200 sq foot and has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

I just finished the basement and added another bedroom (which is currently a toyroom) and a full bath to make it around 3000 sq. foot for the 5 of us.

Our house is around 4500 sq. ft. total. Only half of that is actually house. We have porches all around our house and we USE them. We only have about 6 wks. during the year when it is just too cold or damp to be outside.

That is the best thing about the house. So I consider myself to have a 4500 sq. ft. home since we do use all of the space. Our actual "house" is just a regular home. It is one story and all of the rooms are normal sized. 4 BR, 2.5 baths, kitchen/great room, dining room, and laundry room.

Myself, DH, DS (17) and DS (12). We also have 2 dogs and 3 cats.

Ours is 2596 and there are 7 of us (one is our boarder who has been here 2 years and is leaving in May  ! ).

2800, for DH and I plus 2 dogs. We bought a house to grow into. Didn't make financial sense in our area to buy anything smaller just to turn around and sell in a couple of years. But we're in a low COL area where homes don't move quickly =)

SOOOOO True in our area. Some of the houses in the Barrington area suburbs are just down right embarrassing. The sad thing too is you almost never see people there. On our block there are always kids out playing, bikes in the driveway, parents gathering in the garage to chat. Those neighborhoods of huge mansions look so cold & empty to me. :sad2:

2400, family of 4. Working on finishing the basement which will add another 1250 when done. Since house prices are outrageous, we figure the basement will be the "apartment" our DD comes back to after college. This size is fine with me, I don't think I would like any larger...a different layout, yeah, but larger, no. Especially at tax time!

1700 sq. There are 5 of us plus a cat. It was built in 2000. It's not bad (my 3 kids each have their own room), and the family room and kitchen are a nice size, but #1 there's no formal living room, #2 the laundry room is sooo small(and there's a shower in there too-it's off the second bath-wierd set up i know)
Our next home will be at least 2800 sq. Hoping to move within the next year, just not sure to where yet

Jeni

Currently there are 3 of us and we're in a 980 sq. ft. condo. Baby #2 is due in August and we'll be moving soon to a 1540 sq. ft. townhouse (hopefully! we have to wait till Thursday when we find out that we'll definitely get to stay in DC then we can buy it!) which will be a much needed expansion.

Me, DH, cat dog and hamster.

Current house is 1640 and very affordable. We have lots of disposable income now, but we are cramped!!!

New house will be 3440, more than twice what we have now...and we WILL be house poor. At least for a few years!

2 bedroom, 1 bath, just over 1000 sq ft if you include the partially finished basement rec room. normally fine for two people and two cats but DH's adult daughter and two small children (7 mos & 3 years) are living with us temporarily and it's busting at the seams.
