How big is Hunting in your area?

It's too big here. My SO likes to hunt, I can't stand the thoughts of hunting.

One way my SO remembers my bday is "oh yeah, your birthday is "doe day" ".
Well, may I be the first to wish you an early...

Happy Doe Day!

I am waiting for Saturday......our season started the 2nd of november for all Mainers and then the following Monday for Out of staters.....we do not close any schools for hunting season.......

I'm from Michigan as well. My boys do not have school tomorrow. In fact, I am a deer hunting widow and will be childless from this afternoon through Sunday evening. My husband and 3 sons go away to deer camp so I have the entire weekend to myself and they have "bonding" time with just the guys.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, aahmom, I'm glad that sooooooooooooooo many deer in Michigan feed so many families:D :D :D . My comment about gratuitous killing was directed around the movie. Hunting in The Deerhunter was primarily a "sport" for drinking buddies in Pennsylvania. DeNiro's character came to realize, through the horror of Vietnam, that LIFE is precious in all forms................he could not bear killing any longer. Perhaps you'd be well served to rent the movie :D :D ...........

Here in the UK its a big debatable issue.

I live in the same county(state) as Prince Charles country home.

I am completely against hunting........unless we could hunt child offenders, murderers and other convicted scum.

In which case it would be 'Tally ho'!!!!!!!!!

Not really a big deal at all, as far as I know. Most people around here go further north to Maine nor NH to hunt.

I teach in the UP of MI, and this is our last day of school for the week. As someone else said, it's *almost* bigger than Xmas, a huge $$$maker for an area that is otherwise fairly depressed economy wise. Everyone at school today, students and teachers alike, are dressed up in camo and blaze orange. I personally go out of state shopping for the weekend. Every deer that I pass strapped to the roof of someone's car is one less deer to jump out in front of *my* car the rest of the year. They're literally like cattle up here, browsing at dusk in groups up to 30-40 in every grassy area.

Not a big deal around suburban Boston as expected. I HATE hunting, but I don't HATE hunters. I'm fond of that great scene in The Deerhunter during which DeNiro has a buck in his sights but cannot pull the trigger...........he had loved hunting but could no longer bear gratuitous killing.

I don't know Eros, looking at the entire quote it seems that you hate hunting and then you go on to call it gratuitous killing. I just wanted to point out that MOST hunters don't do it for sport. I don't know 1 single hunter who doesn't eat what he kills.

I'm glad that sooooooooooooooo many deer in Michigan feed so many families .

I'm not even sure what that comment is supposed to mean  is that just your nasty way of saying you don't believe me?

DebinIA, we catch and release fish also.

And we eat those ducks and geese. Well, the firemen eat the duck...I don't like duck. But it is eaten.

this is in no way being mean to any of the posters on this thread......but I have been to a place that did the butchering of cows .....lambs......pigs......turkeys.....(we actually raised ours one year and butchered them ourselves)......Now I know for a fact that no one puts these animals to sleep first before they slaughter them......so that must be mean too......poor little animals all being killed so we can eat them....and fish......I have caught many fish in my days.....and I always hit them on the head after we get them in the boat......no sense letting them flop on the bottom of the boat and suffer........Hunting is a bang bang type of slaughter and they are usually down fast unless you are a poor shot......or you can hit them fast with your vehicle and then they really do a number on themselves and yourselves........NOW lets talk about the veggies in my garden.......I can not live by veggies alone.......so I need a little meat with mine......hope I didn't gross anyone out........oh yah to add to this post........Maine does not allow hunting on Sundays......one of the few states that have this still on the books.......

A friend just called yesterday to see if he could store his first deer of the season in my chest freezer. I don't hunt, nor does anyone in my family, but this meat will feed his family through the winter and I'm happy to store it for him.

Also, I would encourage anyone who knows an avid hunter that may not need the meat to look for a program in their area called "Hunters for the Hungry." Hunters are encouraged to donate any part of their processed venison to the program to feed families in need. If an entire deer is donated, the program will pay for the processing. The Virginia website:

and it is a worthwhile program too......a person can tell their deer processor also to donate the deer and he will do it for nothing.......same with the moose during the moose hunt.......

of loved to been able to make a jackalope out of it...looks like it without the face...on the antlers I mean

Right here in my immediate area it is dove hunting, but deer hunters are around too.
