How bad are crowds at grad nights in April

We are looking at going mid April and would be there over one of the grad weekends. Are the crowds really bad? We want to go for the flower festival, but want to go before it gets really hot (and of course not over Easter or spring break). Any suggestions about grad weekend or the first part of May would be greatly appreciated!

Out here, at DL, they close the park to the general public *before* letting the celebrating high school seniors loose. There is about an hour between closing time and reopening time.
