How are you saving for Disney?

With churning seeming to be on its last leg I thought it might be a good idea to start a post about how others are saving/getting the funds for their trips. I know I’ve seen a few things mentioned in other posts, but I thought it might be a good idea for others to share about ways they’re saving that others may not have known about. I know there’s a few that I’ve been doing way before we even thought about taking a Disney vacation so they don’t have to apply to just Disney.

Right now I’m earning quite a bit from Swagbucks. Typically I earn between $50-$75 a month though I’ve heard of others earning more. Typically I try to do at least 1 survey a day (some days are easier than others). I also let ncraves run while I’m working. I find that I can get the first goal just from the ncraves then typically the survey will get me to my second. Meeting your first and second goal gives you bonus swagbucks awarded the next month. If you meet the first goal consistently you can get more bonus swagbucks on top of that. Lately they’ve been having some really easy offers that will get me another 20-25 swagbucks just for signing up with my email address. It comes out to be 1 SB = $.01 which doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up quickly. Your first $25.00 gc every month (not counting paypal and the Visa gc’s) are discounted to 2200 SB as well. Since the first $25 gift card of the month is discounted I’m starting to get Walmart gc to use at Sam’s Club for Disney cards since Sam’s prices them at a ~5% discount. Anything I earn over that $25.00 I get paypal in case a sale or offer comes up later someplace else.

Ibotta – I used to earn around $20.00 a month from this though lately I’ve been slacking. For those who don’t know about it it’s an app that will give you offers for certain items at different stores. When you purchase them you scan the bar code along with your receipt and can earn cash back. You can cash out at $20.00 for paypal or venmo, but they also offer a $25.00 Sam’s Club gc as well.

Checkout 51 – It’s similar to Ibotta. You can cash out at $20.00, but they will send you the funds in the form of a check in the mail.

Saving Star – Another app for grocery purchases. The nice thing about this one is there’s no minimum for cashing out. The funds can be set to go to your paypal, bank account, upromise account, or they also have gift cards currently for itunes, Starbucks, or AMC Theaters.

Mobisave – Another grocery app. You’re supposed to select your offers before you make your purchases (there’s been times I’ll forget to select and do them the same day and still receive credit). They stay selected for a week before being removed where you’ll have to reselect the offer if it’s still available. Once your purchase is approved they will automatically send the funds to your paypal.

Shrink – Another grocery app, though I can’t say that I use it that often because I don’t typically buy the things they have offers for. It’s nice though if you tend to buy green/organic products as they seem to be what most of their offers are for.

Find&Save – This one’s nice in that it’s not limited to just grocery stores (they’ll normally have offers for restaurants and retail stores), but I’ve found that recently they changed and offers aren’t open for as long as they used to be so it’s something you have to keep an eye on. You also have to watch because sometimes an eligible offer with be for you to spend a certain amount along with buying a certain item (for example Spend $10.00 including a purchase of fries). This one will pay out in the form of a check within a day or 2 of reaching $25.

Receipt Hog – This one you earn coins for scanning receipts. You can cash out at 1000 coins for $5.00 in either paypal or Amazon, but it’s better to hold onto them because the more you earn the less you spend in coins to cash out ($30.00 for 4500 coins).

Shopping portals – I tend to use Swagbucks, Ebates, Upromise most of the time. I always check out cashbackmonitor.com to see who is offering the most cash back. I know Upromise doesn’t have a direct payout, but I find that for certain stores their payout is 2-3% higher, plus I can put this towards my children’s 529.

Credit Cards – Before I started working on saving for our vacation I worked to pay off our credit card debt. I paid off and cancelled one card that had no rewards and kept 2 others. The first is my American Express. I just have the basic card with 1% back, no annual fee, but every once in a while I will receive an offer for money back on our statement for purchasing a certain amount at a store. From what I've found a lot of the time purchasing a gift card will count on the offer, I just need to be mindful of the terms and conditions. My other card is the Disney Visa card. It is also only 1% back in the form of Disney Rewards (basically a Disney gift card) with no annual fee, but I hold onto it in hopes that there might be a decent card holder offer at some point. Currently I’m looking into a card for everyday purchases with a Higher percent back. I saw an offer for the Discover It card which earns 5% back in bonus categories along with having no annual fee, but I need to look into it more.

Other ways I earn are by selling the clothes my kids have outgrown or toys they no longer play with at local consignment sales. I know craigslist/facebook are other options, but I feel better doing it this way since normally they’re big event where people come out to shop. I’ll normally do at least 1 garage sale a year as well to try to “purge” our house of the things that seemed like a good idea at the time we bought them, but ended up just sitting on a shelf or in a cabinet for months on end. J

I know there’s other ways to save out there, but these are the ones I personally use. I’d be interested in hearing what everyone else uses to help save.

I use Walmart savings catcher (used to earn $10-20/month, has dramatically decreased in recent months since they adjusted price matching policy) & Walgreens rewards- takes about a year to accrue $50. I planned to flip Walgreens for a WDW GC but cashiers wouldn't let me (lots of reports this wasn't happening regularly until last few months)... Anyhow I use my rewards on normal purchases & then buy a GC for same $ amount. In the end it "feels" the same to my checking acct.

We also periodically opt to have cereal or leftovers for supper instead of eating out - I then take $20 from my wallet (well under the amount it would actually cost to eat out) & put in a pickle jar.

We also forgo a lot of junk in stockings & Easter baskets opting instead for gift cards (sad!Disney bucks were disckntinued...)

Lastly, we have chickens - we used to give away our abundant eggs; I still do some but people who ask for eggs get charged $2/dozen. Cheap I know but it adds up for us.

Couins & IBOTTA along with unexpected blessings are our biggest savings generators (last year we received a couple hundred dollars refund check unexpectedly for an overpayment, and we get sprinkles all year from random things like class action settlements, refunds, etc...)

Oh and Disney movie rewards - even though the value of a pint has dramatically decreased we earn $20-$50 a year on DMR.

Change jar, Pinecone survey, shopping through Ebates up to $300 earn on Ebates. Auto deposit of $25 a month to vacation savings acct.

SB - $50-$75 per month in GCs and PayPal
Perk - $200-$300 per month in GCs
CC Rewards - several thousand points per month from business expenses which can be used to pay for hotel, airfare, rental cars
DVC - paid in full when purchased on the resale market, enough points to pay for annual trips plus rent out reservations to cover my MFs
Savings - regular deposits made to our vacation savings account, additional deposits from eBates and other rebates
"Found" Money - when our daughter turned 26, graduated from school and began her "grown up life", our water bill went down, our electric bill went down, I returned the cable box from her bedroom and we stopped paying for her health insurance. BIG savings! HUGE! As each bill went down, I increased the amount put into savings (not all of it went toward travel).

Swagbucks ($125/month)

Shopkick $75/year (kids' souvenir money)

Leverage my vacation budget by buying gift cards at Kroger.

OP, I do a lot of the same things you are doing. A few others I do:

Field Agent--It's like a secret shopper, but so much easier. No long paper work, etc... Just agree to a job, do it within two hours, get paid. A recent job I did was take a photo of a candy bar display and answer two questions. Paid $4. There can be competition depending on your location.

Speaking of Secret Shopping--I've done this a few times. It pays okay ($14-16) but I don't like to bother with it.

My Coke Rewards--We have mostly given up on soda but my parents buy a lot and give me the codes. Also my husband drinks a lot of Powerade and they have codes. I get Target or WalMart cards with the rewards.

MPlus Places--This has recently gone down considerably in profitability, but I still check-in if I'm near stores. Lots of gift cards to choose.

Bing Rewards (now Microsoft)-- I get Starbucks gift cards with these.

ETA: Kellogg's Rewards--Kellogg's owns a lot more than cereal.

Trying to do Swagbucks, but I'm just not sure I have the staying power. I'm about to reach my first goal of 1,000 SB for the week, but days like today I'm just not into it, LOL. I did meet my daily goal at least, and I'm at 948 SB (started last Saturday night). If I meet my daily goal tomorrow and Saturday, I'll make the 1,000 and earn my 7-day winning stretch bonus, so that's good. Hopefully I'll at least be able to hit that first daily goal every day on the days I'm not feeling up to it, and on the days I have more time and am more motivated I can make up for lost time. My goal is to earn enough to pick up a few $100 Sam's Club gift cards to spend on Disney gift cards which I'll use towards our park tickets.

Speaking of Sam's, whatever doesn't get covered by SB/gift cards, I'll buy the necessary amount of Disney gc to cover the difference. Between Sam's discount and using my Freedom card (during a quarter when wholesale stores are in the rotation for 5%), that'll be a good little savings.

I've also just cut out an unnecessary expense that will save me $46/mo. We're 14 months out from Disney, so that's $644 that can surely be put to better use!

The biggest thing I'm doing towards the trip is that I got the Southwest Premier card and am working toward the minimum spend to get the 50,000 bonus points. If fares are similar next year to what they are this year (for our dates), that will cover our three round-trip flights to Orlando.

We're also renting DVC this time, so it will be our first experience in a Deluxe resort. We couldn't have afforded it via Disney, so I'm counting that as "savings" for sure. This trip is almost as much about the resort as the parks for us. A dream come true!

Once it's all said and done, I'll be kind of excited to see how much this trip will cost us OOP vs what it would have cost us without the benefit of credit card sign-up bonuses, discounted gift cards (and cash back), and renting DVC.

Can I ask an app question?

On checkout 51 I see bush beans .55 when you buy two.

Limit 5. So I can buy ten cans and use five $1 off coupons from the paper, and get $2.75 in my app account?

Then go to saving star and get the $3 off of 12?

So $10.75 off ten cans?

I just want to make sure I am doing it right before I go into full coupon mode.

You have to buy 12 to get the $3 from SavingStar. Buying 10 will apply toward your goal of 12, but if you don't hit the goal, you don't get a pro-rated rebate.

But yes, you can double-dip on deals that appear on different apps.

As a British visitor to WDW I can't access most of the money-saving tips mentioned in this thread, so as a nurse, the only thing I can do is work overtime. Each time I work an extra shift I allocate the money to a specific item e.g. extra night shift = Christmas dinner at Narcoossee's and so on

How are you earning so much from Perk? I installed the app awhile ago, but from the amount of time I was putting in I wasn't earning that much so I stopped.

One of the advantages of being early adopters of new technology is that you end up with a lot of unused older devices. I run a variety of Perk apps on them (there's more than one app and you can run each app on up to 5 devices). Plus the Viggle app on one device and Viggle .tv on an older laptop.

OP I like your app usage- I need to check into more of these..... at this point I have a hard time just remembering to log into shopkick...:bitelip: I would recommend a redo of your credit cards however.... they can be a lucrative path toward cheaper travel- (if you pay them in full each month that is) The disney visa is dismal in terms of rewards, even a chase freedom card paired with a sapphire preferred is so much better than the two you currently have. Either that or the SWA card for flights is incredibly useful.

I also use swagbucks, earning about $75/month, sometimes more. I put whatever I earn towards a $150 disney giftcard from Sam's, usually paying about $69 OOP for it. I also use perk but earn much less. Ibotta, checkout 51 also earn much less. I also do the NCP scanning of your groceries thing. That is slow earning also for me, but usually good for an AMC gift card. And not everyone's favorite I know, but I use southwest and the disney premier VISA. I have about $300 on the disney visa since April. There are better rewards earners than disney but i'm happy with it. Southwest visa rewards paid for our 5 flights last year but that was many years of saving up points, I don't use that card as often anymore.

That was am typo it is $3 off of $12.

Someone told me I couldn't use coupons with checkout 51 has anyone had that problem?

I use all of our Discover cashback bonus money to go into our vacation fund. I also buy Disney Gift Cards at Smith's in order to earn fuel rewards.

I posted a thread here in June or July because I was for a few ways to "find" the $160 necessary to book the WOC dessert party without it coming out of the regular budget (it was a splurge birthday gift for DD). I didn't have a lot of time because I wanted to book it as soon as the calendar opened. I tried a few different things, including recycling metal (SO not worth it with what I had, but aluminum would have netted me more money), selling clothing to a resale shop (not bad, but they were SUPER picky), selling things on FB yard sales, cashing out a UPromise account that had been languishing, etc. Through some hard work and some luck, I was able to "find" just the right amount and we were able to really enjoy the party without any guilt! ..........P

Here is a link to that previous thread, for anyone who might be interested.
