How are the crowds New Years weekend?

We're planning a trip this coming January and are trying to decide which week to go. We can either arrive on Saturday the 2nd or the 9th. I'm wondering if the crowd that came for New Years will still be there through that weekend or if it will clear out pretty quickly and calm down by Sunday.

Any thoughts?

Well the 9th will be Marathon weekend. Both weekends will be pretty busy (Though not as busy as the week between Christmas and NYE).

If you come the weekend of the 2nd you'll get to see the Osborne Lights one last time.

The weekend of the 2nd will still be pretty busy; I would say at least an 8 crowd level wise. But like Skywise said, you will get to see the Osborne lights one last time so it would be worth it , IMO. As long as you have a touring plan in place for those really heavy crowds, it should be fine. We have gone our last few trips the week after Christmas/NYE time and we were able to do everything we wanted to do with no problem because we had a touring plan.

Ooh, I didn't know about the marathon. When does that crowd hit, and for how long? Do a lot of people come the week before, or stay the week after?

Which week is likely to be better overall - 1/2-1/9 or 1/9-1/16?

Leave the Osbourne lights out of the answer. We will be seeing them in November.

The first weekend will be much more crowded than the second.

Last time I was at WDW we went 12/30 - 1/4. 12/30 and 12/31 were bonkers bananas busy, 1/1 was considerably quieter, and 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 were like a ghost town. Really short lines. This year we are going in early January again before the marathon. Because we really did see a mass exodus on 1/1, I recommend you go 1/2. Just my opinion though!
