Thank you all for the info on Hammond and Gary Indiana we do have to drive through these areas but we will be doing it in the morning.

How about St Jospeh?? There is also Benton Harbour but we are leaning towards St Josephs.

Again your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My MIL lives in St. Joseph.

It is a beautiful town. The beach is nice and the shops and restaurants on the "bluff" above the beach are nice.

How long will you be in town?

Benton Harbor is very industrial.

Are you just visiting the area or moving there?

We actually are only staying 1 night on our way to visit a friend.

I am glad to hear it is a nice place....thank for the info

There are several hotels in St. Joe

The Holiday Inn Express on Lakeshore Drive is nice.

This restaurant is pretty good.

Are you going next weekend? Hotel rooms are pretty booked.

If you're driving through and not stopping after the Gary/Hammond area, St Joe is only about two hours from there. Another area you can stop for the night is Michigan City if you want to get beyond Michigan. The hotels are just past the off ramp. There are also several motels in New Buffalo which is at the border of Michigan/Indiana and has an exit off of 94. Feel free to PM if you have any ????

Why would all the hotels be booked in the St Joseph's area this weekend???

That's right , I remember the Michigan City exit is an easy on off and there seem to be a few hotels right there - sil had a bridal shower at one hotel!!

If you are not going to sight see - just thought I'd add an opinion ... there is one of those factory outlet malls in Michigan City, and the lake area is also very nice to walk and look at!

I have no experience with the St Joe area... Good Luck driving thur to IL on I94 - thru the Chicago Area - when I last went if you kept straight you wound up on the tristate tollway - I294, it was having some construction woes - take I94 north and there is some construction there, but a little less traffic on the night I drove it... then you hit the infamous Dan Ryan which magically turns into the Kennedy Express way , then the Edens - so if you listen to traffic reports, its all I94, just they have "names" that confuse me to no end for years!! (oh and in IND its the Bishop Ford Freeway = I94)

I don't know what else is going on that weekend but DH is doing the Steelhead Triathlon and we can't find a hotel room in St. Joe or Benton Harbor.

Enjoy your trip.:D
