House Visit for Adoption certification? UPDATE - It's over! 2d page, post 29

Take a deep breath! You'll do fine, I bet you'll be surprised how easy it is!

You will do fine, let us know how it went later!

Try not to worry, all will go well. It's fine to offer a snack and beverage but don't worry if you don't. Like others said it's really more about you but a lot can be said about people by their home.

I remember freaking out about our home visit because a few days before we had a minor leak in one of the upstairs bathrooms and there was a water stain on the kitchen ceiling. Why I thought our social worker would say we would be bad parents because we had plumbing problems is beyond me but it seemed logical at the time.

Just try to relax and be your gracious, kind self. Best wishes :) .

I painted walls, cleaned ALL the curtains, windows, etc.

2nd time, same SW ~ we had a toddler in the house. I think :rotfl: I vacuumed and picked up the toys so she could walk :lmao: into the living room.

I was MUCH more laid back for the 2nd adoption.

It is ironic that Bio Parents DON'T have to go through what we do to adopt.

Whew, it's over. It seemed to go well. She loved the room and said we could have two kids in there and even another baby in our room (in a crib) up until 3 years old! Not that we want three kids, I was just surprised.

She said nothing about the fire utensils, liked our place, just wanted to hear the smoke alarm buzz once and was happy with our fire extinguisher. We had a good long talk where we got to ask a lot of questions and seemed to have a good conversation.

We have to finish our classes (our 6th class out of 10 was last night), have another home visit (that one lasts about 3 hours for some reason), our physical, including a TB test and then if we get the okay - we're off to look for our child!

Thanks everyone for the answers and good thoughts - they were much appreciate and much used.

I'm happy that you made it through alive! lol

Wow! You have much more to go through for your homestudy than we did. We didn't have classes, or that 3 hour visit. No one ever checked that our smoke alarms worked. (My DH wishes that I didn't check them periodically... he thinks I'm a little overkill about them.)

When you mentioned the physical, this thought came to my mind... when we had our drug tests, mine came back positive for amphetimines. I've never had an illegal drug in my life, but when I'm tested for something so important, the test shows that I'm a druggie. One note from the doctor let them know that I was taking Allegra D for my allergies and the pseudophedrine was causing the positive result. There was no harm done, but it led to some breathless days for us, if they were to withhold the kids because of this. Actually, since then, I dropped to the plain Allegra and now I take generic Claritin... I didn't want to test positive again for drug usage.

So glad it went well. We must be in similar situations because we go through the classes, physicals, etc. It's torture and frustration and excessive bureaucracy--but it's more than worth it in the end! Hope your wait isn't too long before you have a little one!
