This is what happens for finding a show med season! But what is House addicted to and what happened to cause the cane?

He's addicted to perscription pain killers--mostly vicodin, but he's dabbled with morphine as well.

He uses the cane because he's missing a large chunk of his thigh muscles. A few years ago he was afflicted with muscle death. It wasn't diagnosed properly/quickly enough. While House was in a coma trying to get through the pain of the condition, his then-girlfriend authorized his medical team to cut out the damaged muscle.

He now has constant pain (thus the painkillers) and some reduced function of his leg. And some major issues.

Wasn't he resignd to death though? He certainly didn't want the surgery.

And I thought Dr. Cuddy was the one who authorized the surgery, hence all the drama and tension around them.

My understanding is that the decision to cut out House's leg muscles was made by his (then) wife, Stacy, who made appearances in Season 1. House, apparently would have preferred death and blamed his pain and disability on his wife and they divorced. Stacy has since remarried. Stacy and House had a brief affair (can't remember if it was Season 1 or 2) and, in the end, House decided that he couldn't wreck Stacy's new husband's chances of making the marriage work. Oh, and Stacy's current husband (Mark) also had some medical problem that I think resulted in his being confined to a wheelchair.

The tension between Dr. Cuddy and House is mix of sexual tension and a power struggle. In the most recent episodes, Dr. Cuddy is planning to get pregnant via in-vitro fertilization and House seems perturbed that he isn't being considered as a potential donor.

I didn't think Stacy and House were ever married. I think they just lived together.

I never really thought House and Cuddy were attracted to each other. I know he was upset when he wasn't being considered for a sperm donor, and I know he thinks shes attractive, but I was under the impression they couldn't stand each other. ???? I could be wrong. I thought it was funny how Wilson was being considered and he tested her saliva to find out if she had cancer, or if she really wanted to date him.

Both Cuddy & Stacy made the decision for House to have that operation. He was conviced that the problem would be fixed if they just waited, he knew if he had the operation he would have constant pain for the rest of his life. But like someone said, he was put into a coma because of the pain and Stacy & Cuddy both decided to remove the tissue. He was really (understandably) upset when he woke up and I think thats why they broke up. If I'm not mistaken, this all happened before the show- it was like a flashback I think.
